Rear screen exploded!

Featured Replies

WOW! Gave me a hell of a shock as I closed the tailgate in the usual way :o

2015 vRS estate

 Cause unknown,

Ever happened to anyone else?

Autoglass on the case via insurance. Came straight out and sort of 'cling' filmed' it up for now.

New screen tomorrow afternoon.

Outside of the comedy 'closed it down on something in the boot' there could be loads of things. Stress fractures finally giving way? Flexed more than usual? Colder temperatures exposed a weakness?

Make sure theres no early corrosion around the hatch pushing into where the glass sits.

Bet it gave you the fright of your life!

Nah. Boot was virtually empty.

Autoglass man ....who was extremely efficient btw...even vacumed up glass off the driveway.....suggested it might have been something as simple as a stone chip that created a weak spot.

Difficult to inspect now though unfortunately.

It did give a fright. Horrible dull thud as it disintegrated, followed by crackling as the breakage spread.

Daughter came rushing out as she thought I'd fallen over, but wasn't particularly impressed with my language however. :)

Thats nice of him! Bet it was everywhere!

The mrs has a fabia monte carlo with a pano roof. All was fine for the first month and then when it got cold it developed a crack out of nowhere, turns out it was a fault with the glass.

Ive had side windows jump the runners and shatter on me, its a strange experience!

It wasn't too bad tbh, as the tint film held most of it in place.

Did sound like a gun going off initially, albeit a bit quieter.

They originally said they wouldn't be able to replace until next week, but told them I had to get it done asap as I use it for work.

They managed to persuade an operative to do some overtime tomorrow to help me out when the screen arrives.

Bloody marvelous service....so far!

Cant argue with that. Think i have a £75 excess on mine but thats a lot cheaper than paying full price for the replacement!

Rear windscreens are usually tempered glass, very strong but pressure or relief in the wrong place and they just explode.

You can tell if glass is tempered by looking it it through polarised sunglasses, there will be like a checker pattern.

I lost a rear glass on my Mk 2.5 Octy. Came out one morning to find a single stone in the middle of a shattered window. I just touched the stone and the whole lot fell through.

I however had a much longer wait. My rear glass had an aerial etched into the glass - I had factory fit SatNav and there wasn't a single glass in the country from anyone - I ven tried Skoda direct, despite that costing me more as they were not an insurance approved supplier.

I had to run with plastic and clingfilm on the back for around 4 weeks while I had glass shipped in.

Don't really think of rear screens getting stone damage, but yours, and possibly mine, proves the case it seems

I couldn't believe it when I saw it.

I stood and worked through what must have happened. A vehicle must have driven past me, flicked a stone up almost vertically and it's then dropped down into the middle of the glass.

A freak accident no doubt - 99 times out of a hundred I'd have had a paint ding at worst as the stone hit the side etc.

We had one destroyed in the works carpark after the bloke strimming the grass kicked up a stone.

Can happen all kinds of ways :D

Anyways, my experience with Autoglass has been absolutely first class.

All done and dusted. Super efficient in every way. Even took all the tailgate trim off to remove every last slither of glass out of the bottom of the tailgate.

10/10
