Backfiring sound

Featured Replies

I have just bought a Skoda Citigroup SE 2015 plate with 26000 on the clock. As well as a rasping noise from the engine when it gets to the peak of the gears ( I have seen the other posts on this),  I hear what sounds like a little back fire from below the car if I rev it when stationary and when I change gear.

Also when accelerating in 5th gear I hear a noise/rattle from the engine similar to the noise from poorly set points in old cars.

Has anyone else experienced any of these issues please.

thank you

Welcome.

Your car might benefit from new Spark Plugs.

Ignore anyone at Skoda John Clark or any other dealership that says they are good for 40,000 miles or 60,000 miles, checking them now might be Simply Clever and if removing them as well to fit new ones.

Have the Tech check the cars Fault Codes, there might be Misfires logged, or maybe not, but as it is if a Main Dealer serviced the car that should be done anyway as part of the Service.

Hi Offski,

Thank you. I will have a word with the dealer.

Hi, I might be wrong but I believe there is some sort of rev limiter when the car is in neutral/stationary so that may answer that part of you’re question. Cheers Paul

Slight detonation is normal for these engines. Nothing to worry about as there is a knocking sensor.

Hi Emil,

Thank you. That’s great to know. Apart from that it is a great wee car.

Cheers

Thank you -I didn’t know that. Cheers

Rattle noise? Heat shield above exhaust are poorly designed on Citigo. Please check that as well.

I replaced my spark plugs at 35k miles since July '16, the service manual recommends 40k, but I take your point and with winter upon us...

The old VAG plugs had a gap of 0.051" up from 0.040" factory.

I guess it makes sense to remove, clean and regap at about 20k.

I also converted one of my spark plugs into a bottle opener after 20 minutes on the lathe.
