SLA Auto Changeover

Featured Replies

For those that may have travelled abroad with  a Superb equipped with SLA did the lights change automatically to accommodate driving on the right?

I tried changing the driving side over but it advises me not available.  I will confirm he message but it also seems the SLA is working and the lights are reacting and dipping to conflicting traffic.  I thought this should not work see manual:

I wonder if the applied fix, "dances on startup" overrides the as installed SW to change the light response.

Thoughts?

Mine has HID for dip and mainbeam and the headlights automatically go into "travel mode".

according to the manual - your lights r behaving as expected.

dynamic light assist still does HBA (high beam assist) when in travel mode.

are u sure u have SLA?  i.e. it does the "masking" thing when high beams r on?

with SLAs, the high beams do NOT react by dipping - instead they auto mask the high beam.

with HBA, the high beams do react by auto dipping.  it doesn't mask the high beam.

I did a resumé of my first trip across the channel in 2015 (in the 280 thread IIRC) when the S3 was still a new thing with many unanswered questions about how the car would behave abroad.

SLA was one of the things I mentioned. Despite the manual implying SLA reverts to HBA I discovered it remained functional, masking high beam rather than just turning high beam off.

I've done countless trips to Europe since and come across the 'function not available' message when accessing the Travel Mode menu.

I always use the Chunnel.

1: If I leave the lights set in the Auto position the dipped beam will switch on (if not already on) when I enter the train and again when I start the car for disembarking. It's after this that I get the 'function not available' message in the Travel Mode menu and it's only once I've stopped and restarted the car that it becomes accessible. Restarting the car also displays the message on the MFD about the lights being switched for driving on the right.

2: I soon learned that if I switch the lights to Off when I enter the train and don't switch them back on until I'm clear of the train - and the SatNav map has scrolled from Folkestone across to Calais - then the lights are already adjusted and I have (unnecessary) access to the Travel Mode menu.

In either case Dynamic Light Assist has always remained ticked and seemingly functional.

I am happy with UK operation and the differences between HBA and DLA but what I was not sure about was the discussion i had seen about auto changeover from left to right hand side.

Well just had a play with it again today:

If you leave light selection in auto nothing changes, it stayed in left or right as selected.

If you are driving you cannot change Travel Mode between left and right.

If you are stationary you can change Travel Mode between left and right and the shape of the dipped beam visibly changes.

if you are Travel Mode left (incorrect for driving in Europe) then full DLA works when auto lights selected and headlight stalked flicked forward.

If you are in Travel Mode right (correct for Europe), see pic below, then only HBA works when DLA and auto lights selected and headlight stalked flicked forward.
