Why does my fan come on?

Featured Replies

Hi can you tall me y my fan comes on after 5mins of driving and when I stop and stop engine is not running

Welcome.

Sorry no i can not tell you.   No idea where you are in the world or the weather, is it cold or high summer there?

No idea what car or engine you have, or what age or miles.

Could be the Water Pump, Thermostat or many things, but maybe not any fault.

Hi my name is Anton and im in Bulgaria. I have similar problem with Holly190. Now its winter here, obviously , and the temperatures outside are 1-2 degrees celsius. When i start my car (octavia 1.6 102hp petrol) the fan starts right away. And the climatronic is off. So when i  stop the car, start again, everything is just fine. Still no solution.

I have a 2011 Octavia diesel. Had no problems until I had the VW / SKODA update regarding emissions.

Now the fan comes on after two or three miles of running and then stopping.

Regenerating

If your vehicle is 1.8, then it's petrol (1.8TSi)

If it's a diesel then it's either 1.9* or 2.0 TDi. *(discontinued early/mid 2010. 60/10 VRN)

If it is a diesel, the fans are staying on due to your vehicle trying to perform a 'Regeneration' or 'Regen'.

Btw, another sign of regeneration is a rather awful smell like something (like rubber) is burning.

When I bought my car and visited a friend, he said - seems like you have been driving rather fast. I asked - why? He said - don't you feel the smell? Then I started worrying about some possible overheating etc. After some while I read about DPF things :)

Actually it's a problem. Many people feel worried about strange behaviour of the car (high idle, smell, higher fuel consumption etc.) but it's the common things for DPF equipped car. Not known to the user, though.

Faulty fans, thermostats and rubbing wiring harnesses are a relatively common complaint on the MkII Octavia...

As mentioned, if it's a diesel then it could also be an interrupted regeneration of the DPF, discussed at length here..
