Oil smell in cabin

Featured Replies

I drive a 2006 Ocy vrs. So I've had the cam chain and tensioners replaced last week. The horrible noise that I had before has gone away but recently (about 5days since it's been changed) I'm getting a strong smell of oil in the cabin at lights and when i get out the car  in fact it actually smells like gear box oil. Any chance this could be connected.

Worth mentioning i hit a sleeping policeman when turning in to a road pretty hard.. going over it with my right front and smell has only come since that.. not sure if that's coincidence or the course. Not sure what to look for!

Any advise would be q help as my mechanic Is off now till new year

Have you checked under the car for a leak?

Also, have you checked the engine oil level on the dipstick?

Was services 2 weeks back.. dip stick looks good but did notice a little oil on the floor after it's been sat for 8 hours.. so suspect I have a leak somewhere.. couldnt notice anything obvious looking under the bonnet ..wonder if it was going over that bump has knocked something "/

I'd strongly encourage a careful check underneath to see if any of the hanging-down bits are showing signs of damage.

If it smells like gearbox oil and you hit ground then it's possible you have cracked the gearbox case.

Been left 15hours and this is what I found to have leaked.. obviously I've pulled it from under the car and placed it next to where it was poisoned.. will need to get it on a ramp to inspect.. doesn't strike me as much but defo smells in cabin when blower is on "/

Worth mentioning it had a slight leak when I brought it.. looked like it was coming from rocker cover.. they tightened the bolts on the service thinking that was the issue

That could well still be the issue. If the rocker box cover is tightened down unevenly or the gasket/seal is imperfect you will get leakage when the motor is running and - with fresh oil in the motor - it won't smell sour like engine oil does after a while.

Try wiping off around the rocker box joint to see 1) if there's oil there and 2) so you can go back after a drive and check for fresh oil.  If nothing else it should help reduce the number of candidates for the source of the leak/s.

Thanks for the advise.. I'll give it a go..

Had it up in the air.. looks like the leak is coming from high up towards the back of the engine or turbo.. gearbox looks fine.. looks just as it did last time I had it in the air befor the service and bits i had done.. only this time the smell comes in to cabin with the blower on..eurgh
