Fuel Gauge - how far can you go with the warning light?

Featured Replies

I don't know, these days. Years ago they certainly used to warn against it, and the place where the fuel left the tank was not right at the bottom. I've seen previous manuals warn against letting the car go dry, or even very low. There is a fuel filter of course as well.

But I don't think it is a good idea to go down to 0 on the gauge anyway, the car might be okay on the level, then come to a hill and stop getting fuel immediately. I'd feel a right barnpot if that happened to me for no good reason. I think I heard that even the AA will charge you for bringing fuel in a can if the only reason you call them out is that the tank's run dry.

I have Maxi dot on mine and it warns with 75 mile range remaining on the computer. I was told when I bought my 4x4 that there is still approx 1 gallon remaining in the tank when the computer shows 0 range, not that I have the balls to try it lol

Yeah, but the trouble is once you reach nought, it's going to read nought from then on till you run dry. If the computer isn't accurate................!

My 02 Reg Nissan Primera Diesel (new model) ended up showing -30 miles to go at one point so anythings possible. (If the numbers still went down without a fill up I would have kept it :) )

I tested this out for myself last night and since my car is only a few days old and hasn't had its fuel tank filled up completely, it was even more of a risk. I drove right down to 0 miles remaining on the range indicator and the gauge right at the bottom.

It made it to the Shell petrol station I was planning to get to and filled up to 50.86 litres. There must have been another 4 litres of fuel left (55 litre tank) but I don't think I'll risk testing that out.

At least it answers my question and I know that I can go right down to the bottom with 0 miles on the range without it collapsing. Thanks for all of your input, it has been interesting to read.

Look of course its daft driving around without refuelling when the range indicator reaches 0 miles but i see absolutely no problem in actually letting it go right down 0. At that stage in my car there's at least 4 litres remaining in the tank which is ample to get me to the next petrol station even if its 10 or 15 miles away and I have to drive up or down a steep hill to get there.

Working at a dealership, we run all our cars on fumes!!! Personally, done about 12 miles on 0, colleagues have done 20ish

My personal best is 32 miles after 0 miles remaining in a PD105 Ambiente.

I'm just a worrier !!!

I've done about 20 miles after the trip computer showed 0. I was twitching a bit though looking for a filling station late one Sunday night in unfamiliar parts of Reading, having just dived off the M4.

Didn't brim it though as the place I found was extortionate.

Well I've proved the point to myself late last night. I got approximately 15 miles out of my new Octavia vRS whilst it registered 0 miles remaining. Thankfully I dropped my passengers home before driving to my local Shell filling station.

I don't believe the reason that you shouldn't let the tank run too dry is because you will suck up the crap, as since the fuel is taken from the bottom of the tank anyway, you are already sucking it up.

The real reason I believe, is that as you suck up the last drops of fuel it will also suck up air, which will cause misfires, which may damage the cat.
