higher tax on 4x4s?

Featured Replies

just wondering what the latest budget scam will mean, if anything, for us octavia 4x4 owners... :thumbdwn: be interesting to see how a '4x4' is defined.

Co2 emmisions not drivetrain

Well, I'd assume it can't be based upon anything that isn't already on your V5 so if that doesn't say 4x4 transmission then how will they know? Easiest way would be to just increase the prices in the high CO2 VED bands as plenty of 2WD cars use loads of petrol. Its a token effort really.

If you're buying a Range Rover sport £100 a year wouldnt make you think twice, would it !

does it not? hmm never actually paid attention to that one! cheers!

Its over the 4x4 threshold !

If they're serious about the environment or raising some tax revenue then it should

from the beeb:

Cars with the lowest rate of emissions would pay no vehicle excise duty but the 1% of most polluting cars would pay

If he really wanted to tax off roaders why doesnt he have a tyre tax based on the size of the tyre? It would be easy to come up with a formula to tax only those with off-roader tyres.

According to radio 2 All cars with emissions greater than 225 g per Km driven will fall into the higher category, that includes guzzlers like the Mondeo. BUT it only applies to cars registered after today

Oh, fan bloody tastic! :(

Can a dealer register a car before they have it ?

I think no & it would have to be today

I think they should keep the same scheme as they have now with tax but a lot higher increase between eachj level of carbon output.

e.g (not sure costs now but....) say £100 for 100g/km 300 for 150g/km £600 200g/km etc

not sure on the figures but something like this. they could make it fair by also calculating the miles driven per year. so the less miles driven the less tax it would be.

so it could still be affordable to drive a sports car but just not affordable if you drive all day everday.

They should do what they did on Jersey - abolish road tax and add more tax on petrol. That way people who use most fuel/most roads pay more in "road tax"

Easy.

Yep , penalises those who do more mileage or drive thirsty cars , and can't easily be avoided like the current tax disk

That happens already the more fuel you use the more tax you pay.

I'd rather it didn't go on to Road tax aswell as it would no doubt cost me too much money to run a car.

More miles mean you pay more on your insurance (you get taxed on that) you use more fuel (you get taxed on that), you use more oil/consumables (oh you pay tax on that too).

No the government gets more than enough tax out of me thank you very much!

My octy 4x4 just cost me £135 to tax but my wife has to pay £170 for her toyota MR2 - must be all the damage that her car does what with it being so big, heavy and gas guzzling! pmc

Just checked the figures and interestingly it only affects the V6 estates, whereas the hatch and saloon are still below the new limit! I wonder if we'll see additional restrictions in the exhausts to try and keep these values down?

Chris

What is the actual breakdown? Not found it yet. :)
