NTL Users

Whilst looking at my webstats today I noticed that NTL tends to give away locations, example -

These are shown as pages, hits, bandwidth and last visit.

Also Friday is by far the busiest day with 1700 being the busiest time.

NTL proxies do that, a lot of ISPs do this though :)

I came across a site - can't even remember what I was surfing for now - that was a marketing tool which gave virtually all of my computer information onscreen (even though running all the usual protections and a few more).

It seems to me that if you're on the Net where your ISP is a received number, then it's a free for all, i.e. way beyond "trusted sites" - IOW anybody can get the basic system operating info from your computer and broadcast it on the web for all to see. That was system rather than data, so before paranoia sets in, someone somewhere probably knows that as well.

My rationale is to either with live with that or get off the Net. :ne_nau:

Several or just one???

[Mental note] If its that easy for Stu The IGS team could ream you at any point[/mental note]

Must go and get some work done ;)

Mo, it doesnt really give anyone any useful information about you though unless you have a fixed IP address (which, I guess you dont). Even though the data is pretty limited. The protection software you're running would prevent anyon emakin guse of your IP address etc. anyway.

IMHO, all protection software/hardware has a weakness (or can be made to have a weakness ;)), but I suspect the calibre of hacker willing to put the time and effort in to crack it would have his sights set a bit higher than a home user ;)

Chris

Yes, but I'd question just how useful the information that "a person behind this proxy is using this operating system" is to someone with malicious intent.

Would be surprised if it was much use at all...it is however, rather useful for webmasters and marketing to see who is checking out a site, and so who to design your web pages and applications to best suit...

Rob.

Mo' date=' you may be thinging of http://www.danasoft.com which provides graphics for forum signatures that include some of that info.

Imagine how many users there are behind each of NTL's proxies! How are you going to narrow that down to a particular user?

I was thinking in terms of VRStu's post that information is likely (possibly almost cetainly given some US laws) to be accessible to others whether overtly available or that which can be obtained. For data, encryption progs are available for run-of-the-mill intrusion prevention, and I have one though that's irrelevant.

I was more thinking why VRStu thought it was a problem. Sorry if my layman reply has diverted that :o

I was more thinking why VRStu thought it was a problem.

I was intimating it was a problem merely that I had noticed that NTL users were grouped by areas and as mentioned above this could be used for marketing.

There is a huge array of webstats available for me with my host' date=' and all others I suspect, to see who is who, when they visit, what pages were viewed, what browsers were used etc.

Several or just one???

I'm sure Ensliegh have a pretty good idea of what you have been looking at anyway.
