2.0TSi 220ps availability in Superb L&K 2018

Featured Replies

Does anyone know when this engine will become available? Right now the Skoda website only shows the 272ps 4x4 petrol engine in the L&K...

[car lease runs out in August next year and I've had a letter telling me to order soon because of long delays]

I suspect the 220ps tsi is now discontinued and will be replaced with the EA888 Gen 3B engine

That would be a shame, 184ps leaves a massive gap to the 272ps 4x4 -- I reckon the 220ps version I have now is about right... :-(

Yeah the 220 is a good allrounder imo

So was the 1.4tsi, maybe VAG finds it unacceptable to have good engines.....maybe dealers complain about too little work.... ;)

I guess it's a good reason (not that you really need one!) to opt for the 272 .... plus you get much better traction :)

The extra power of the 280/272 over the 220 only comes in at high revs -- power and torque figures are as follows:

220ps : 350nm 1500-4400rpm, 220ps 4500-6200rpm

272ps : 350nm 2000-5400rpm, 272ps 5500-6500rpm

[280ps : 350nm 1700-5600rpm, 280-ps 5600-6500rpm -- better low-speed torque than 272ps as well as a tiny bit more power...]

The 220ps wins over the 272ps below 2000rpm, they're the same from 2000-4400rpm, the 272ps only wins above 4400rpm.  Added to the fact that the 4x4 is 110kg heavier, the 220ps is actually quicker everywhere up to 4700rpm, with the 272ps only faster above this.

I do agree that the better traction would be helpful sometimes, but since I spend the vast majority of the time in the rev range where the 220ps is quicker the 272ps doesn't make much sense for me compared to the 220ps -- which is why I didn't go for the 280ps last time...

Of course other people who spend more time pedal-to-the metal may think otherwise ;-)

Unfortunately if the 220ps is no longer available, the EA888 Gen3B engine is only 300nm 1600-4000rpm and 184ps 4400-6000rpm, both 16% lower than the 220ps -- so certainly slower than the 272ps :-(

The newer engines seem to be losing the lower end torque of the previous gen engines. Maybe an area where real emissions were too high in real world emission testing such as RDE.

Hopefully the gen3b won't have any undesirable low end "characteristics" (thinking 1.5tsi)

Statistics spot on but having owned both a 220 and now a 280 the difference in the actual driving experience is significant , especially the elimination of torque steer under load .  220 is of course a great car but I am hooked on the 280 now , my second one in fact :)

Where the 280 scores is traction. I've not managed to unstick mine yet, and I've tried. You can actually use the power you have. I drove a 220 for a 40 mile test drive and found I could unstick the front wheels accelerating in the damp conditions much like my old 2.0t Vectra. But to be honest I suspect in everyday use it would make very little difference.

I've found pulling out of junctions quickly in my 220 does sometimes cause wheelspin/judder/banging, especially in the wet -- less often since the OEM Pirelli P7 were replaced with Michelin Premacy 4.

This on its own (plus the extra high-rev power) wasn't enough to make me choose the 280 over the 220 -- however given that the 220 is no more and the choice is now 272 4wd or (real soon now?) 184 2wd, I think it'll have to be the 272 this time...

[diesel is right out given the noise/vibration compared to the TSi, also the uncertain future with tax/pollution zones sicne I live in outer London]

I guess it's a tough call Ian but I'm sure the 272 will grow on you   :)

Yeah i have the 220 and under hard acceleration it does spin and judder, if 220 is no longer available just get thr 272!
