DSG Auto Box

I have just took delivery of a Karoq SE L Auto. what is the right setting i.e gear and engine mode should I be in when going up a hill for those who know it I go up and down Parbold Hill twice a month. Also the gear shift moves to the left what is that for?

If the gear shift is 'to the right' then the car will decide automatically what gear to be in and if you press it to the left then you can also move it back & forward to change the gears manually within certain constraints.

You also have paddles on the steering wheel that you can select gears manually

You just need to drive - it's an auto so will select the right gear for you.

It's worth spending some time with the manual to familiarise yourself with some of the basic controls.

You can download them in PDF format here...

I understand how automatic box works what I forget to mention in my original post the engine is a bit sluggish going up the hills I have already been up and I thought I might be in the wrong engine mode.  Note to self read post before sending

What engine do you have?

The petrol engines are a little low on torque, which is often realised on steep inclines, especially if in the wrong gear or if you (or the DSG gearbox) is slow at selecting the right gear. The key is to keep the engine speed at the optimum torque, which is more difficult compared to the higher torque diesel engines. The DSG gearbox should do this for you but they have been known to get themselves confused from time-to-time. They can't read the road like a human can either so only know they're on the hill when the engine bogs down.

There is a kick-down function on the accelerator pedal. Pushing it down as far as it will go will drop a gear, increasing the engine RPM's and hopefully releasing some much needed acceleration before you reach the incline.

It is worth experimenting with the mode.  I used Sport mode on a run recently and it seemed to keep the revs in the 2000-3000 range (1.5 engine) compared with normal mode which kept the revs in the 1500 -2000 range on light throttle.  We don't have many hills around here so I don't know how it will change performance on a hill but at least you would start with higher revs.  Incidentally, at 60mph, sport mode does not select gear 7 but stays in 6..  My previous SEAT with the same DSG box would downshift to apply some engine braking if you braked on a downhill.  It didn't seem to react to down gradients unless you also braked.  I assume the settings on the Karoq are the same.

You can also change to sport mode on the gearbox.  To select sport, pull the gear lever back from the normal D position.  However you select Sport mode, you have to do it every time after the ignition is switched off
