Hydraulic tappet knock Fabia 1.4 16v

Featured Replies

My Fabia Mk1 1.4 16v, which I’ve had from new and is at 120,000 miles running perfectly, has developed a knock from what sounds like a single tappet. The current Skoda dealer is reluctant to take any action. Seems a shame to scrap an otherwise fine car, but the noise is doing my head in! I appreciate that diagnosis involves a top-end strip down, and could require as much as a replacement head. I don’t have facilities to do this myself. Any suggestions or recommendations would be very welcome.

When was its last oil change (miles/months since change)

Hi Ken. Oil change by dealer May 2018. Around 2,000 miles since. The knock was first noticed shortly after the service, which included cam belt renewal. The dealer then checked the valve timing which was ok. Their view was, 'It’s an old car'. Since then I’ve tried a can of hydraulic tappet treatment (Wynn's? Halfords) which seemed to help at first, but not for long.

OK; I was trying all the cheap stuff first, but it should be possible to identify which tappet is stuck without needing a strip down (specialist tools and a proper mechanic yes, but no need for head off unless it has to come off for the actual replacement). What you need here is a good local garage, not a Skoda main stealer.
