Poor sound quality with new head unit

Featured Replies

I have a Fabia MK2 2013 and I recently bought a new head unit which I was getting very poor sound from, and at certain pitches it was so tinny it was almost crackling. I messed around with the equaliser and wiring but couldn't find a fix so assumed it was the unit I bought as it was quite cheap.

Now I've bought another (px5 android) unit and spent a bit more on it in the hope that the sound quality is better but I'm still getting the same issue. Albeit the sound is slightly better than previously, it's still very tinny and at certain pitches there's a high pitched crackle.

I've put the old swing unit back in and it's all fine there, so could it be something to do with the unit being too powerful for the speakers? Or some wiring not done properly?

Please help!

Do you have a factory fitted amp?

I believe so yes

That would do it ;)

You should either remove/bypass the amp or contact the seller to see if the headunit is compatible and what config needs changing.

Ok, thank you!

How would I go about removing or bypassing the amp if I needed to?

@langers2k any suggestion how I find out if I have a factory fit amplifier? Or how do I find out what kind of sound system my 2009 Octavia has?

Just yesterday I installed a px5 android head unit and the BT streaming is fuzzy when a song has high treble. Music from YouTube, when the head unit is connected to wifi is spot on.

Also, the radio tuner does not work at all? I've contacted the seller about the tuner and he's asking what sound system I have, but I'm not sure as it's a pre-owned car.

I replaced the Columbus HU, but it didn't come originally with the car.

Sorry to hijack your thread Adman, but I'm also interested in finding out about bypassing the amplifier if needed with my HU.

PS. My HU is the Xtrons PE98MTVPL

No worries, I hope we both find out!

Come to think of it, I think that the radio sound is fine and it's the Bluetooth that has the issue too. I've tried turning my phone down all the way and the speakers up but still having the issue.

You can check for an amp using VCDS or similar to scan the car. Otherwise, you can try checking under the front seats as that's probably where it would be fitted.

To be honest, if the sound quality/volume is 'normal' for at least one source, the problem is unlikely to be an issue with a factory amp...

Might be worth contacting the seller to see if there is a software update?

Thanks for the reply. I've contacted the seller and they have confirmed it's up to date and also told me to change one of the Bluetooth settings which also didn't work.

Could it be to do with interference in the Bluetooth between the phone and the head unit? If so do you know what could cause the interference?
