Return of the Prodigal Son?

Featured Replies

Just the germ of an idea at present but I am considering buying a pre reg Toledo at £12.5K. In the past I have had two Toledos and one Rapid with 1.2 TSI engines of 89 and 110 BHP. At present I have a Skoda Superb L&K with the 276 BHP petrol Engine. I bought the Superb 18 months ago because I had never had a " flagship" car from any manufacturer. The Superb has proven to be a great car with limousine like qualities. However for my needs it is often too big, too fast and too thirsty . It has also depreciated £7.5K in 18 months.  I only do about 4K miles per year and the Superb's long distance and large mileage qualities are wasted on me. My questions are as follows:-

1, Is the 1.0 three pot engine better than the old 1.2 TSI?

2. Are the LED headlights much better than the old halogens?

3. Would I be paying too much for the Toledo at £12.5K?

4. Anyone got any experience of the Suzuki Baleno Auto which may be  an alternative purchase?

Engine I'm not sure about TBH, I'm happy with my 1.2 tsi and the economy. It does look a good package and I'm tempted to swap, financial wise I'm hanging on a little longer

And stop press you can get a pre reg (del miles) for £11.5k now, search Seat UK website used cars.

I paid exactly £11.5k for my Toledo SE Nav back in 2014, the above mentioned has got to be s bargain now.

1.0? Smooth, quicker then 1.2, quiet cruiser, no torque. Most like it, but I dont, it was a pain to run in (the recommended rev limit never gets you to the torque) and the mpg was poor for maybe 2000 miles till it loosened up.

LED headlights much better than factory halogens, but better than aftermarket bulbs I don't know.

Checked a few days back, cheapest pre reg was 11.5k. Its stonking value but WYSIWYG, there are no factory options to add to the spec as its out of production.

I've previously owned 2 Rapid's (both 105 BHP TSi's) and currently have a 1.0 TSi 110 BHP Toledo Xcellence, purchased new @ £11995 August 2017.

1, Is the 1.0 three pot engine better than the old 1.2 TSI? - in my opinion yes, although with a few caveats. The 1.0 3 pot has proved more economical than the older 1.2 TSi (105 BHP) and certainly likes to rev. I find it cruises well a higher speeds and once rolling has a good spread of torque. The only negative for me has been a (relative) lack of low down / off-boost torque. The older engine would happily pull from low revs, whereas the lower capacity unit, perhaps unsurprisingly, doesn't. A friend was considering a new car last year and I lent him my Toledo, as he thought it might be a suitable replacement for his ageing Focus 2.0 TDCi. He hated the driving dynamics of the 1.0 TSi and found it impossible to reverse it up his very steep drive, without slipping the clutch. I too have found it tricky to reverse up-hill without lots of revs / slipping the clutch and the associated smell of burning clutch linings.

2. Are the LED headlights much better than the old halogens? The LED's are a complete revelation and better than any headlights I've previously experienced. The halogens in both my older Rapid's were poor, although better when fitted with (short-lived) Osram Nightbreakers. I also replaced the fog lights with LED's and have enabled "cornering fogs" with Carista. This markedly improved visibility at night / when reversing / turning into a poorly lit street. Hoping the LED headlights prove long-lived, as any out-of-warranty costs could be an issue. I see a number of cars on a daily basis running round with faulty LED DRL's (? MOT failure) and assume this might be indicative of the life-span of LED's?

3. Would I be paying too much for the Toledo at £12.5K? I paid £11995 otr for my SEAT (August 2017). This was not pre-registered, although I suspect some of the cars currently available may well be. This makes little difference in practical terms, assuming the mileage is suitably low, although may mean the warranty period has already started,  A family member recently purchased a Peugeot from AC - this was delivery mileage and pre-registered. The 3 year manufacturer warranty begun when the car was registered, so they missed out on 6 months of warranty. The ~£4k price differential, when compared with a car sourced within the Peugeot dealer network, was a deciding factor! All of these have delivery mileage, are pre-registered (June 2018 onwards) and will now have less that the orignal 3 years warranty remaining: pre-reg Toledo

My thoughts on the SEAT Toledo: https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/446255-seat-toledo-10-tsi-xcellence/

In terms of my findings with fuel economy, my current SEAT Toledo 1.0 110 BHP TSi is averaging 43.5 MPG - best is 52.2 MPG and worst is 38.8 MPG. This is over ~15k miles, in a largely urban / commuting setting (more here: Toledo 1.0 TSi Fuelly). My first Rapid (2013 hatchback) averaged 38.8 MPG, over ~16k miles (more here: 2013 Rapid Hatch Fuelly) and a 2014 Spaceback averaged 40.3 MPG, over ~12k miles (2014 Spaceback Hatchback

Ultimately these are cheap cars, which fulfil a specific purpose of providing (relatively) inexpensive, spacious and efficient family transport. They are in my opinion the last of the true Skoda's, in that they are entirely value oriented. The replacement has moved up market, as has the cost! I'd have no issue recommending one of these, although it will be somewhat of a "come down" after the flagship Superb!!

On a separate note the 280 BHP Superb appeals as a possible future purchase - have any issues arisen with it during your ownership and what is the realistic daily MPG?

Thank you for that very useful advice. As I stated I am not unfamiliar with the old 1.2 TSI Rapid/Toledo. If I do return to the fold I shall miss the Superb's DSG most of all I think. As regards MPG for the 280 about 40mpg in the height of Summer on a long untroubled run. Summer average for all types of motoring about 30MPg. Winter untroubled run about 33mpg but vey cold weather and urban stop/start down to 22mpg I am afraid. Then again you do not buy the 280 for its frugality!! The 280 has been totally reliable and a real pleasure in the 18 months I have owned it but it is just too BIG!

Many thanks for the feedback on the Superb - a car which is definitely on my radar. The MPG seems more than reasonable, given the performance potential.

I have actually now purchased a Toledo Xcellence costing £12K which ,with all the bells and whistles, is a remarkable bargain. I shall miss the Superb for its many qualities but for me it ultimately proved to be just too big.It is also a totally new experience for a car dealer to hand me a brand new car and put money into my bank account as well!!! It could be argued that I have purchased an obsolescent car but I look at it this way ....it is a well proven reliable model which has stood the test of time and has had the latest tech (LED headlights/ Kessy/1.0 TSI 3 pot engine etc) added to it over the years.

Well done, enjoy.

Just a small thing, I can't understand why the new 3 pot Toledo has the VED at £145, am I correct? My current 1.2 is £30. The stop/start is a factor in mine does the current one have it?

My previous Citigo also 3 pot motor with stop/start was zero VED.

My 1.6TDI emmissions are lower than 100ppm registered before March 2017 then no VED at all, and other low emmissions VED pro-rata as they rose. After March 2917 minimum VED £145.

Congratulations on the purchase your new car:thumbup:

Your thoughts regarding the value of this specific model mirror mine entirely. It's a remarkable package, which stands comparison with pretty much anything else available for the same price.

I consider a Fabia, but the standard equipment and space on offer with the Toledo were the deciding factors for me.

The Government changed the cheapo VED bands when too many cars qualified so yes only old pre Apr 17? Toledos get the £20 rate. Cars registered more recently pay much more even though they don't pollute more.

Still been looking at these new (pre reg) Toledos, sadly I've decided to stick with what I have.  I can't really justify buying yet another new car although the current one is getting on for 5 yrs old, it has and still is  a great car for price paid.

Anyways I'll still keep an eye out, best price so I've seen so far for this model £11,313 with less than 50 miles on the clock.

I think we will all be long gone by 2917, and won't care whether it's free or £145.:hi:

Oops - I need stronger glasses or smaller finger ends. Make that 2017 not 2917. Cheers.

No problem could have gone with the over-used but popular "should have gone to specsavers" but tried to be a bit more original, more surprised no-one spotted it or commented earlier.:notme:

Picked up the new Toledo today and it was like meeting an old friend. Sod's Law dictated that it was pouring down with rain when it had been dry for a month though! First impressions are all positive and the 3 cylinder engine , which I was worried about, seems more than adequate even though it is very tight. The appalling weather did highlight one thing though and that is that both headlights "fog" up with condensation. Is this normal or a fault? I am going through the owner's manual at present but I have noticed that the rear passenger doors do not open either via KESSY or when pressing the remote. No doubt this is a user set function but if anyone can enlighten me on how to activate the rear door opening I would be very grateful.

I haven't experienced any of the above as I have the 2014 model.

Do check unless they have modified these, all doors are free of water. Some earlier models collected rain water (Rapids too) in the door panels. It was usually a case of easing the rubber seal away from the door frame that runs along base of the door. A good idea is to poke something like a zip tie end up the drain slots fore and aft on the base of the door, sometimes they collect body wax or muck and block.
Another annoyance can be the tailgate, it has a tendancy to buffer (wind noise) if not properly adjusted. Easily done with the bump stops suitably adjusted.

As I say not big issues and easily sorted on the earlier models, I did mine and it took all of about  10 mins.

CAR menu on HU, then Settings. drivers door or all doors.

Cant recall foggy LED headlights on mine though.

Yes - the LED headlights on my Toledo tend to fog up (on the inside). I'd assumed it happens as the headlights generate very little heat (as opposed to halogens). Despite this there had been no obvious issue over 16k miles / 18 months.

As above the locking pattern can be altered via the head-unit to be either all doors, or just driver unlock (on first press).

I additionally enabled auto-lock on driving off.

If you put your foot down in the sedate and ultra comfortable Superb 280 it turns immediately into a complete monster. Its nature was summed up best I think by one motoring journalist when he said that he liked the 280 most of all because of the lunacy trying desperately to break out amongst all the sensibilness.

Edited by Robbydazzler

Very similarly to you I traded my 2016 VW Scirocco R 280ps for my Rapid Sport and what a difference it has made.

The Scirocco is a monster and I discovered that I have no self control so every road was a race track. 25 years of driving and I got my first points with it.

The Rapid by comparison is such a relaxing car to drive. It will overtake if you need to but it's more about getting you there in comfort plus despite only being 43 I was finding it difficult to get in and out of the Scirocco.
