VCDS for newbies - useful or more harm than good?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Sorry if there's already been a topic on this, i looked but couldn't find it.

I was wondering whether VCDS is something that is user friendly, relatively intuitive and partially idiot proof for use by newbies who want to learn using the forums.  I ask because it looks like a useful investment for me to do mainly diagnostics.  However, my previous experience is being a mechanic on older cars and limited mainly to using OBDII readers to clear error codes.  Whilst I think it may sound like a good idea to get VCDS and start doing this stuff myself, i'm worried that my enthusiasm will outweigh my abilities and could lead to making matters worse.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Providing you follow a few basic rules it’s pretty foolproof.

  • ALWAYS save a scan of the car before you change anything
  • Saving ‘admaps’ is also recommend before doing adaptations
  • Do your research before you change anything
  • Take note of any warnings that pop up whilst coding
  • If in doubt.... DON’T, unless you are prepared for the consequences

VCDS is certainly not a black art, but read a few of the tutorials on the Ross-Tech website so you understand what you are changing and how to make the changes.

Hi Gizmo,

thanks for that info, really useful. I’ll have a look at some tutorials first and go from there.
