Trouble with my knee, but I was wondering (when I get around to it) where to mount my new dash cam.

There are sensors both sides of the drivers mirror I believe and I would like it to be unobtrusive as well as legal.

My dashcam is behind the mirror on the passenger side. The sensors are in the mirror housing behind the black plastic mount cover and they face out of the window, the dark patch on the windscreen is just to cut down glare from the sun because it isn't covered by a sun visor. Mine's been there for 6 years now with different cameras and no issue. 

 

On the odd occasion, the MOT tester has removed it but when I asked for confirmation of why as it is virtually invisible in the normal driving position they just get defensive.

The dotted area around the mirror boss doesn't fit into any of the prescribed areas for the MOT. It is the area that you are requested to put toll tags and they aren't easily removeable!

I too fitted my dashcam behind  the mirror but on the driver's side because mine does have a sensor on the rear passenger side of the mirror. I assume it is a sensor for the auto dimming function of the mirror.

Yeah, mine has that too. The dashcam doesn't affect it at all, it hasn't in 2 Octavias either. I was referencing the rain and light sensor in the mirror body.

I have a suction cup mount, will this hold on the stippled area around the mirror boss?

or can you get a double sided tape fitting I wonder

According to the Nextbase website, that is what they suggest to aid you installing your dashcam to the dotted section of your windscreen;

Unlike most other manufacturers Nextbase don't appear to offer a more permanent mount when you hardwire it.

No, it is self adhesive one side and flat on the other, so you thoroughly clean surface of screen ( or dash etc) then stick this disk onto it (using the self adhesive pad). That gives you a flat surface to stick your satnav suction mount to.

That is not what they sent me! The sticky pad replaced the suction cup and the DashCam fitted directly to the sticky pad, the back of which was shaped to accept the DashCam. A quick look on Amazon or eBay will quickly find suitable sticky mounts to replace the suction cup as well, although a bit of glue is suggested to firmly hold the ball of the DashCam into the socket of the self adhesive holder.

In the end I bought an Anker Roav HD Dashcam because once fitted it looks like an original part of the windscreen, it is almost invisible from the outside of the car and hardly visible from the inside. Great quality video with parking mode and WiFi connection to Smartphone to download clips and to control all the settings. Faultless so far.

Some garages when you take a car in for a service will disconnect the dash cam so the MOT garage my do the same so you cannot see what they do to your car

Quite correctly, unless you have permission from the site owner to film on private property.
If you don't like the policy don't use the garage.

I have the same dashcam and fitted it behind the mirror on the driver's side. I had no idea there were sensors behind the mirror though! I put it on the driver's side mainly because I ran the cable down the right hand side (tucked under the roof trim and A-pillar) to the fuse box and piggy backed off the rear wiper fuse using the appropriate cable. I think I had to get that separately. I did panic that I had done something wrong as the rear wiper was intermittent until I found out that is a common problem and nothing to do with the cable.

 

Since I had to remove it from my previous car, the glue on the self adhesive holder stayed mainly on the windscreen but luckily I managed to get some double sided foam tape from work to replace it.
