SatNav map updating and importing .GPX POIs

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm a new owner and hoping for some help in updating the SatNav maps and importing POIs from my Garmin.

As far I can make out, my 66 plate Octavia has an Amundsen infotainment system.   The Version details seem to be:

5L0051236H

0521

ECE 2016.

That indicates 2016 maps to me. I've downloaded "ECE 1 2019/2020" from the Update Portal and unzipped it to an SD card.    It seems the next step is inserting the card into the slot in the glove box and pressing the update buttons on the SatNav.  And waiting some 40-45min while it installs.   Fingers crossed.

As for importing existing personal POIs,  I'm confused.  What is the file format to be used?  GPX is no problem as my Garmin produces that format more or less natively, so is it just a matter of following the import procedure via the SD slot?  What is the VCF format all about?  The Skoda "My Destinations" page kept throwing out either empty folders or error messages, about failing to read the CSV and KML files.

An idiot's guide would help me!

Many thanks,
John.

Hmmm...  The map update wasn't accepted.  I might try another download.

And no, *.gpx files are not the format - "VCards" was expected.  But I can't find how the cinvert them.  All the links in the site are 404s, updated or switch to a site default.

This is not a good start.  Looks like back to the Garmin.

I managed to convert my *.GPX file to VCF using http://mydestination.skoda-auto.com/POIs but again it wasn't read.  A PPOI file from 2014 was found instead. Very odd.  The converted file structure seems correct though some folders are empty.  See image.

I have the original Navigation SD Card (Europa KW45 2015) is slot SD1 which is essential for the system to operate.  Neither replacing it with the new download nor putting the update in SD2 produces anything other than error messages.

The downloaded updated has sub-folders for VW and SEAT as well as SKODA, but the system doesn't seem to read any of them.

It's all very frustrating considering how easy it is to update and manage a £99 Garmin.

Any help or advice gratefully received.

I used a CSV file for my POI then converted them using this: https://github.com/jimmyH/mypois

That's beyond my pay grade!

Success on the map upgrade to ECE1 2019/20.  Must have been third time lucky after the snow stopped.

I'm going to give this a shot: Create Destinations (vcard files) for RNS 510 navigator

The basic format seems to be:

BEGIN:VCARD
VERSION:3.0
FN:NAME
GEO:LAT;LONG
ADR:;;ADDRESS1;ADDRESS2;;POSTCODE;COUNTRY
END:VCARD

Enter your data into the fields in red bold.

For 25 or so entries a bit of a chore, but there seems to be no reliable converter around.

You haven't got an rns510 so it might not work...

True, but my Amundsen only seems to import VCard format files.

Any other suggestion welcome.  All the links recommended in other threads are dead/significantly altered and I can find no other converter.

I'm away this weekend but if you're still having issues on Sunday drop me a PM.

I'll either do the conversion for you or try and walk you though doing it yourself using the tool I mentioned earlier :-)

That'd be fantastic!   Thank you.  I'll contact you tomorrow.

i had similar issues, gave up in the end and used the Skoda portal to re-do them.

right click > add to list > edit and save > list of destinations when done all needed > save list  (i open with 7-zip) > click and open 'destinations and copy files(s) to wherever convenient for you.

then SD card into unit and import as usual

Thanks for your posting.

The Skoda portal produces an output nest of folders from my Garmin GPX export but the Amundsen produces an error when attempting to import.

The Skoda portal produces errors from a CSV or KML input file.

Update.

1.  The Skoda "My Destinations" portal will read .CSV files, but the columns need to be Latitude, Longitude, Name, in that order with no column header/title.  (See attached screencapture.)  However the output is not read by the Amundsen.  This would appear to a fault of the on-line conversion.

2. The following VCard format, saved as "Morrisons.vcf" works.

BEGIN:VCARD
VERSION:3.0
CATEGORIES:VIP
X-VIPCategory:Private
ADR;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:;;Dee Lane 38;WIRRAL;;CH48 0QA;United Kingdom
X-NAVADDR:;;;;;;;;;
GEO:53.37175369;-3.187236786
X-FLAG:
REV:20190211T000741z
FN;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Morrison's, West Kirby
UID:AddresBookPersistentProvider3
END:VCARD

However, it seems the Sat Nav will only accept one entry at a time from an SD Card.

The second and subsequent files come up as destinations but ask for an address when selected.  Very odd.

3. The Amundsen's routing, directions and traffic diversions are very good - it's a shame about the crazy way to enter multiple destinations.  And I wish I could remove the POIs (restaurants mostly) which appear in the secondary Sat Nav screen.

Many thanks.
