New ES and a flat battery. Relay or switch?

Featured Replies

As the title says, my battery is flat due to my new ES is always powered on. Apparently this is standard on Skoda(?) And I have no pericular joy in ruin my dash with a switch but will if I need to. But I started to think about a relay, a switch of sort. To hook it up to the ACC wire. Which relay is could I use or is this a bad idea?

Didn't you post about having the same problem with a new entertainment system recently? Langers2k gave a solution and like that issue, you need to solve this the same way by using a switched power source.

Have a look at silver1011 post in this thread: Fuse to piggyback a dashcam switched supply which has a picture illustration this.

I did, but since I didn’t find a “dead” fuse only live ones I thought it was easier to create a new thread regarding relays/switches.

My apologies if it was wrong.

No need to apologise - it seems the problem is finding a switched power supply in the fusebox?

I see you are in Norway and left hand drive. The pictures here and suggested locations will/could look different on your car (most of us here will be right hand drive cars).

We probably need one of the other left hand drive owners to chime in on how they fitted a switched dashcam.....

The problem is that according to my multimeter all fuses are live with the ignition off and key out. I’ve tried every fuse in the fusebox and scratching my head.

Is that in the dash fuse box? I'd expect at least some to be ignition switched...

On my UK-spec car I used fuse #42 - Light Switch.

Fuse #39 (Rear Wiper) and #38 (Heated Rear Seats) are both empty on my car, and are switched live (i.e. on/off with the ignition).

Unless my MM is faulty...hmmm...I can always do the same test as with a 9V battery, the old lickaroo

Sounds like a good pair of fuses to test! Thanks!

For dashcam - I've switch connected to the rear 12v sockets ;) my dashcam is ON before car leaves my parking and is OFF when back - with the exception of parking at work as there is CCTV anyway ;)

If you connect it to the ignition controlled source - what is the point ? S*** happens at supermarkets or petrol stations as well.

My setup has a 10-second recording safety margin. It always records no matter the power source and always saves the pre 10-seconds when a collision is detected. And records for 5minutes after. But my problem is that it drains the battery for me when plugged in, instead of using the bulit in standby battery.

What if someone scratches your car when you are shopping for an hour or so? I have 128gb card and can record about 36h on two cameras in medium quality ;) recording is in a loop - 5mins pieces - I don't touch it unless I need/want to save something ;) after 2 years I've ditched battery as well ;)

Left the car few times overnight - no problem with starting in the morning.

Solved it by using the radio fuse, #43 if i recall correctly. Amd yes, found several dead fuses, I had locked the screen accidentally on the MM.

What unit is that?

I see you have climate display but do you still have maxidot information etc?

Changed it mainly because off the BT and CD-player didn’t work. So got it of wish.

Maxidot Information, thats the MFD between the speed needle and RPM needle?

I love it, very sturdy unit despite “cheap china stuff”. Handled -26°C with no problem at all so this is good stuff!
