1.6tdi high idle

Featured Replies

Octavia 1.6tdi . Having problems with the idle speed. It is ticking over at just under 1000 rpm. I though at 1st it was doing a dpf regen but this is not the case as it's been doing it for several days now. Anyone else had similar problems?

1000rpm is not a high idle...

It might be higher than usual but given the current cold weather a higher idle is required because the engine will have more load on it. It takes more energy to keep batteries charged in cold weather, the oil will be colder and therefore thicker, so a higher idle warms it up quicker and gets it moving around the engine more.

Thanks for the reply.  The wife has had the car a cpl of yrs and this is the 1st she has really noticed the high tick over. Must keep an eye on it and see if it changes when the weather improves

As long as it's not hunting and doesn't idle excessively high (1200+) I wouldn't worry about it.

Once the car has warmed up the idle speed should drop to normal. I've had this behaviour from diesel and petrol Octavias.

Unfortunately the revs do not drop when the engine has warmed up this is why I think I have a problem.

I've noticed this with our 1.6TDi and 1.2Tsi at times.

In fact our 1.2TSi has been sat at 1000rpm idle for the last week of so but it only does short trips so I've put it down to battery load due to the cold weather.

Might be worth checking the battery, I have just had the battery changed under warranty as it gave up the ghost. I had all sorts of odd running conditions leading up to the battery failure and one of those was a persistent high idle speed.

I have read that a faulty coolant temperature sensor can cause the engine to idle too high.

So can constantly interrupted DPF regens but, they are much cheaper too cure.

Read the sticky thread at the top of the O3 section, something along the lines of "my diesel car stinks of burning rubber
