Fabia 1.4mpi best avoided?

Featured Replies

I'm in the market for a used Fabia, circa £4000, which will get me a 2012 or 2013 if I'm lucky. Have just seen a decent seeming 1.4mpi advertised. I've read somewhere that this particular engine can suffer from an issue of burning oil, but I know no more than that. Can anyone in here shed further light? Is this engine really best avoided?

Welcome.

?

Are you sure you read write and that is not the 1.4 TSI 132kw Twincharger engine that might use oil rather than a MPI?

I know nothing about a 1.4MPI as have never had anything to do with them. I know a bit about 1.4 TSI / TFSI 132-136kw Twinchargers.

I'm relying on distant memory so I'm not sure! IS there such an issue on the TSI, then?

There is an issue with some 2010-2012 then when the engines were changed 2012-2014

There is a good early one for sale in the Briskoda Cars for sale.  Maybe over your budget but it is a good one.  Seller is looking for offers.

Or maybe other Forum Members know of good ones for sale.

Maybe have a look in the Mk2 Fabia section if it is the vRS you are looking at getting, or any other Mk2 Fabia.

EDIT.  This one. http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/459242-skoda-fabia-vrs-2011

Just edited that for you buddy

OP, I'm guessing here with your lowish budget for a 2012/2013 Fabia, but maybe Skoda were still using the old 1.4 16V 86PS - which was a multi point injection engine and would be the cheapest engine option if you had reliability in mind?

If I am correct, that engine is okay, old tech and simple so cheap to run, no fancy direct injection or turbo, fuel economy not so good though but acceptable.

Hi there, I have a 2007 mk2 fabia with the 1.4 mpi and 80000 miles on the clock. Over the 20000 miles and 3 years I have owned it the engine has been faultless, it has never failed to start and can return around 43-45 mpg on the motorway at 70mph. It is also very cheap to service using shell helix ultra 5w40 and a mann/bosch filter it can be done for around 30 pounds if you DIY. One issue I have noted is that the tappets do click a bit, especially when cold. Finally, I would advise against long (ie.20000mile) service intervals as this can shorten the life of the engine because usually the best oil is clean oil.

Thanks for the replies. Very much appreciated. :)

I must confess I'm not very mechanically minded, but I do know that the Fabia is my car of choice and I want to get a reliable one! Also, that I probably want to avoid the 1.2 60bhp engine as the one I drove was really slow!

The 1.4mpi I'm interested in is not a VRS model - it's showing on Autotrader as 84bhp, so possibly it has the engine rum4mo mentioned? I've been googling like crazy and can find several mentions of excessive oil consumption for the 1.4 TSI and the vRS, but not the MPI. Perhaps my memory has got its wires crossed... So... I will have a look, at least, at this1.4 mpi Fabia.

Any further experiences /thoughts about the 1.4 mpi engine most welcome!

I am not spotting the one that you are looking at.

I like the 1.2 12v 68bhp with the likes of the Skoda Reaction's.   They go OK, but if you are after more go then maybe your 86ps is the right one.

Is it the Red 1.4SE @ £4,490 Asking Price ?    DK12 XPB

OK.

Are they not MOT'ing it?    I looked at last years advisories on the MOT.

I would want that work done if not done already, and a new MOT. Or you need to budget for that being done.

Thanks. Very good point. Hadn't looked at the MOT history but have now! If I like it I will ask for a new MOT - not long left on the present one...

See how it goes.   It is only their asking price anyway, and a bit high.

Likely if you offer to pay for a MOT before you buy they will not be interested.

Places that will not pay £35 trade price to MOT cars before sale are not where i would go to buy.

They might just not be interested in cars that fail and need work done.  Reducing their profits.  But then a new MOT at proper 'testers' not 'mates' is a plus on pricing cars IMO.

Looks like a good car. However its a bit strange that the suspension bushes are wearing out after only 40000 miles.

Yes, what might be the cause of that? Maybe last owner used to speed over speed humps or something??!!

Slight play, common on wishbones to look like play, they are a bit weak on the fabia and depends who or how its looked at, and perished.....well a bush can always look worse than it is, could just be a fussy tester.....in fact he bothered to put down undertray fitted, well thats just the norm on modern cars.

And as mentioned, 12 months MOT before you agree to buy, if the dealer has anything about him, he would not question that.

Also has "something" stuck on dash near headlight switch.....bluetooth adapter or ......

ALso, its states bodywork in good condition, well the problem is with that EVERYONE has diff opinions....look at damage on bumper......to me that is not good condition, so I think you need to see it because photos hide crap bodywork...

And more.....so to me this car does NOT have good condition body work......its "fair" imo...

You have to decide what YOU want......but it needs looking at as its top money for what it is so it should be MINT..

Looks like a typical low mileage older person run about (probably women) and damaged on each corner.......(not that im sexist at all)

Many thanks for pointing out those blemishes UrbanPanzer. I'm not bothered by these as long as they're superficial, however they may give me extra bargaining power!

Hey no problem, Not trying to down it, if your not bothered then great........... just wasted days to many times travelling to see cars "supposedly" in good condition at top money and they turn out to be rubbish.

And yes bargaining power for sure, at top dealer money it def should be pretty much perfect, the dealer is relying on the "low mileage" to sell because generally they like to think people will "assume" it will be good and no matter how much of a baragining person you are once we have travelled to see a vehicle that we might have been looking at for few days it can difficult to walk away as you "want" it and for me things like body damage would just **** me off everytime I wash it :@

As you say, everybody seems to have a different idea of what 'good' means! I've always driven absolute bangers so to my eyes the body is good enough!! If it were without blemish I suppose it would be described as 'excellent'.

  • Author

Actually, having just looked at these pics again, I'm coming round to your way of thinking, UrbanPanzer - maybe 'good' is a bit optimistic...

But will have to see it in the flesh to really know...

Thanks again for the replies. I decided not to view this car in the end (though I might yet!) as there seemed a fair few negative reviews of the seller... Hope to look at another Fabia this week...
