Tyre wear shock absorber?

Featured Replies

Over summer front struts were changed. The steering was stiff. The front left tyre has worn on inside edge, it is now down to 2mm even though centre is at 5mm, it appears the front right shock absorber was shot.

I would have expected the faulty shock would have affected only the tyre on the same wheel to which it is attached? As the spring is so stiff there was no tell tale fall in the height of car. Car has been tracked btw well before tyre wear was evident.

What's your opinions on this?

Ps

If you are in market for new tyres ATS has free fitting till end of January.

£97 per tyre for pilot sport 3.

It might be an alignment issue which has not been checked as you said only tracking was done which normally meaning toe checking/adjusting.

What else is adjustable then?

Camber and caster via adjustment of consoles/subframe relative to body.

(M12 fasteners through 17mm dia clearance holes if you need to ask)

Caster and camber were checked and in tolerance. Although this was after changing suspension, so most tyre wear had occurred already. A previous alignment two years ago showed caster, camber ok. Tyres are maragoni. I had issues with these on other car, flat spot after an emergency stop where wheels locked up for only a few minutes.

Get the console bushes checked out.

Shock absorbers have no bearing on the height of the car.

Ok, that's why I didn't notice shock had failed.

You say checks were AFTER the change of shocks and tyre wear was PRIOR to new setup...

This would suggest the shocks were not letting the car track correct so I would now think, all being checked and new shocks/tyres, etc, you should be ok from now on!

Any check of wheel alignment will be done whilst the car is static so once you were driving and say, going round corners, etc, the car was not self levelling or operating the way it was designed to do. Keep a regular check on the tyres but I think you most likely cured  the issue already, unless, as Vindaloo suggested, other bushes are failing. I suspect the guy who set up the tracking would have had at least a cursory look at this, though.
