Rooms terms out 1.9 TDi 07 plate

Featured Replies

Hello guys, new to the forum.

just bought a Skoda Roomster Scour 1.9 TDI 2007 plate with 62000 miles 11months MOT

Previous owners said it has been sat on drive for a few months, drove it home from Hereford to Somerset and all was well.

gave it a good clean and polish with some autoglym and she has come up like new.

The car was sold to me for £1700 with no service history. The front electric windows are not working and the brakes may need some attention sooner or later.

have not got loads of cash atm but need to get the cam done and a service. Any idea what a ballpark figure might be in terms of price for this work and is it vital to get it done before driving it anymore.

thanks for any replies, great forum btw.

Hi RoomsterRay, and welcome to the forum. Nice Scout. I'm very happy with my little Roomy.

These pages will provide you with lots of information and the peeps on here are always helpful.

Regarding the cambelt change, I just had mine done last week. Skoda will charge you around 400-450 (including a new water pump). If you can get it cheaper than that at a Skoda garage, then that would be OK. Mine cost around 340 all up from an Indy. I bought a SKF cambelt set from eBay:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Skoda-Octavia-1-9-TDI-Engine-Timing-Belt-Kit-Water-Pump-Cambelt-Chain-By-SKF/272460422901?epid=249230522&hash=item3f6fe81ef5:g:QuAAAOSwHMJYNbjp:rk:3:pf:0

It's worth buying a drive belt as well and get that replaced:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SKODA-ROOMSTER-5J-1-9D-Multi-V-Drive-Belt-06-to-10-Contitech-038903137M-Quality/232705111457?fits=Car+Make%3ASkoda|Model%3ARoomster|Cars+Type%3A1.9+TDI|Plat_Gen%3A5J|Cars+Year%3A2008|BodyStyle%3AMPV|Variant%3A5J+[2006-2015]+MPV|Engine%3A1896ccm+105HP+77KW+(Diesel)&epid=1745293882&hash=item362e4e35a1:g:gukAAOSwxwRasfXl:rk:8:pf:0

Also, when I had mine done, the mechanic said that it was the water pump seal that usually fails and leaks coolant on to the belt and subsequently deteriorates that, creating a failure of the belt. In that instance, you could ask the mechanic to apply some hylomar blue to the seal face before assembly:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hylomar-Universal-Blue-Gasket-Jointing-Compound-Sealant-100g-Instant-Gasket/131630596212?hash=item1ea5cb8074:g:cYsAAOSwI-BWIkbI:rk:2:pf:0

It's great stuff.

Difficult to know when servicing was last done for various items, and thus how old or worn bits are.

Scroll back through some of the forum threads, the electric windows might need freeing with some WD40, or could be cable deteriorated (usually through the connector where doors open, might be blown fuse if they were stuck

Check brake fluid colour, should look a bit like white wine, if grubby looking needs changing (old fluid absorbs moisture and will cause rusting in brake lines), will then be faced with much bigger bill

If it passed an MOT then most things ok, but get the belts changed and things like oil change.  No reason why a car with the simple 1.9 diesel shouldn’t do another 50,000+ miles, and 5+ years providing sensible maintenance is done.

Brakes will need doing, but once done, again should be good for few years

Electrical bits, I suspect some will need sorting, but parts for Roomster are easy to source on internet, and lots of bits in front half are common with Fabia mk 2

If you want to save money, It is possible to do many minor things yourself, and plenty of you tube videos exist showing how to fix things

Get the cambelt done ASAP, and don’t thrash engine in meantime, see post above, about £350-450.

With all the other bits, servicing brakes etc probably going to be spending £1000 (but thing of it as giving it a 5 year life extension) so even with your purchase price only costing you £60-70 per month average for next 5 years for capital and depreciation.   Obviously running costs (fuel, tax etc on top)

Thank you very much John and newbie for the replies.

just spoke to my mechanic this morning and explained the situation, he said will go through it with a full service and change the oil and all the filters and any thing else that needs doing. Basically a full service for £220

said dont bother with the cambelt till 80,000 miles as they are bullet proof on these engines.

Was a little surprised, but have been using this guy for years, I moved area so he is a bit of a distance from me, but whenever I want a really good job doing I make the effort to travel.

trust him 100% so looks like can hold off with the belt for a bit.

Have spent a bit more time cleaning her this morning, looks like a new car, was a bit risky buying with no history, and I’m not really mechanically minded so did my best to examine her.

Phoned Skoda this morning and the garage that has been doing the MOT for previous owners, trying to chase down any history, but no luck with that.

just hope I got lucky, think I might have, everything feels tight and right, fingers crossed.

Just had a little look at the engine, they are a few parts that look newer than the rest and they are quality parts, so there is hope it’s been looked after well =) all the fluid look full and clean as well.

@RoomsterRay - I'm no expert, but I think the cover for the battery fuse tray is missing.

Looking good. Welcome.

Was a bit messy inside so a bit of hoovering and polish and elbow grease and all nice and clean now, apart from the seats, next on do list, going to hit them with a steam cleaner and perhaps put some covers on, need some floor mats as well.

Hi just a quick question, is it worth getting decent filter (oil, air, fuel) for the service or does it not make a lot of difference.

and if there are decent ones could someone point me in the direction of where to get them please.

thank you

Spec 505.01 for the 1.9 TDI VW ENGINE.

Ok so just a little update, have done some research and have ordered the following, basically tried to go as close to OEM as possible.

Mann Air Filter

Mann Fuel Filter

Mann Oil Filter

Mann Cabin Filter

Castrol Edge 5 / 40 5 litre

Gates cambelt kit

Hylomer blue seal

Sump Plug

Drive belt

got a very cheap quote to fit the cambelt and change all the oil and filters for £225, but not really wanting to use someone I don’t know, so will wait for all the parts to arrive and then go to my trusted.

have gone to a lot of effort researching and sourcing the parts, but want to keep the car long term.

Took a picture of my engine bay today, and mine looks the same as RR's.  :emo:

Yes have seen quite a few online and seems there was no cover for the battery.
