Towbar electrics causing big problems

Featured Replies

Hi there. Has anyone else had scary electrical problems after a towbar was fitted. We had our towbar independently fitted 10 months ago. No problems until this week when the dash lit up like Blackpool Illuminations and it started waggling its wing mirrors like Dumbo's ears. Then it wouldnt start.

Am I just unlucky?

.....are you sure you did not activate flight mode (small button on left indicator stalk)?

How do you know that faults you're experiencing are related to the tow bar?

I'm guessing you've had an aftermarket tow bar fitted, and we're not talking about the factory fitted tow bar being installed post delivery?

There are plenty of threads in here, and over on the Karoq forum detailing issues some owners have had with aftermarket tow bars, especially in relation to Park Assist and the Blind Spot Assist.

It all depends on how the fitter has integrated the electronics into the cars existing wiring loom.

How was the car coded to tell it a tow bar is fitted?

Did you have the 'Tow Bar Preparation' option fitted at the factory?

Assuming it's been working fine, and has only recently started playing up I wonder if it could be temperature related, or snow / slush / water ingress somewhere?

Were you towing anything at the time or have anything plugged into the tow bar socket ??

I'm not sure this will help as I didn't have as many lights on as it sounds you've got, but when I fitted my towbar (did it myself) I didnt bother to code it - and it was fine for more than a year, but then I disconnected the battery for some reason and the orange triangle light (front assist and other things) came on and Skoda insisted it was because of the towbar. After claiming for ages that there was nothing they could do because they couldn't code a 3rd party tow bar, I eventually persuaded them to code the tow bar using the Skoda settings they would use for their own tow bar and it worked fine after that.
