Aftermarket stereo with climate control

Recommended Posts

I've been searching on this but cannot find a definitive answer.

We're going to look at a 2006 Octavia vRS which has climate control with the two little LCD screens above their temerature control knobs and the temperature repeated on the Skoda Stereo screen.

If I replace the stereo with an aftermarket one, will I lose any of the functionality of the climate control or is it just repeated on the Skoda Stereo screen?

I know that the Erisin head units have this on them and I might go in that direction,  despite the mixed reviews on them, however,  I might go with what I know and fit a universal stereo in a facia plate that has the features I want for the quality. If I do this it won't mirror the Skoda head unit.

Cheers

If it's the same as my old 07 one, there is no control of the climate control from the stereo so AFAIK, it's just a display.

You may want to find someone with VCDS or buy a copy from Gendan (Don't get hooky copies off eBay. It doesn't end well) and recode the car as the vehicle will keep trying to talk to the old stereo and it being absent may cause you issues if you don't remove it from the car's memory.

Thank you for the prompt response. Is VCDS like VAG Com? I'm new to the VAG world! Edit: just Googled it and seen it is VAG Com!

If I don't get the Erisin I'll perhaps stick the aftermarket one in and if it gets upset take it to a VAG independent specialist nearby just the once until I assess if I need to invest in such software. I've not got a laptop to get near the car.

Thanks again for the quick reply as I'm looking at it tomorrow.

It's not got rear parking sensors,  so I'll be fitting a reversing camera too if anyone has any recommendations?

For an after market stereo you'll also need to run a switched live from the fuse box as the original stereo is turned on and off via the can-bus.

For the reversing camera you mean?

No, for the stereo itself.

The oem stereo in the Octavia doesn't have a switched live connection only a permanent live, it uses can bus messages to turn it on with the ignition and off when you take the key out or open the door. So for an aftermarket stereo you will need to run a switched live from the fuse box to turn the stereo on/off with the ignition.

Alternatively there are I believe some after market boxes available to buy that can interpret the can bus commands and switch the stereo on/off as required.

VAGCOM was renamed VCDS a while back. I understand VAG got the hump with the name so Ross-Tech changed it. Any software that is still called VAGCOM is very out of date and will probably have an old cable that doesn't work properly with new (post 2015) cars.

If you want a copy of your own, always shop at one of the two UK authorised retailers (Gendan is one. I can't remember the name of the other.) Don't buy copies on eBay. They are often hooky and come with unofficial cables which don't work right. It rarely ends well. The official Ross-Tech cable also contains the license for the full version of the VCDS software. You can get a home user version (full functions but limited to being able to change settings on 3 cars) here https://www.gendan.co.uk/product_VCV23.html

Cheers. I have a universal code reader, so shall see how I get on with just that. I'm hoping not to have any problems, assuming we buy this one as one we looked at last week was a big disappointment after 2 hours there with 2 hours back. This one is 3 hours away, so we're taking our 3 year old and have booked a Travel Lodge. It does look better mind.

Good luck. I would take your code reader with you to check there's no early warning signs of anything expensive. A crop of fault codes can also be a good price negotiating aid. I wish I'd done that when I bought my first vRS. It was throwing ABS,Traction Control and Tyre Pressure alarms intermittently. All these things are measured by wheel rotation on the Mk II. Turned out the car had a wheel bearing in the early stages of failure.

Oh I will be. It's in the glove box of my Beemer ready to go!

This one is in a dealers who claim to be a Skoda specialist. It looks good and they have 5 Octavia vRS in, so I'm hopeful it will be all good.

The cable is available from Connects2. Its a quad block iso adaptor which comes with a box that gives you a switches live. Saves having to run extra cables etc

That sounds ideal. Where's it get its switched live from?

Cheers

There is a thread on here about some aftermarket android ones.

Might be worth a read - I'm considering this one.

Cheers. I've not looked at Xtrons, so shall see what they might have to fit mine.

Well I've looked at Erisins and Xtrons but neither say their head units fit a pre-facelift Octavia mk2. They all say 2007 on or 2009 on.

I've asked an eBay seller and his response was to measure the old one and compare to their dimensions, which doesn't show good knowledge on their part and leaves me feeling like I'm taking a bit of a risk as to whether it fits or not, depending on how well I've understood where to measure etc.

I wanted an OE look, as does the Mrs, who's car it is.

It looks like I'll be spending more for an aftermarket one with a fascia adapter. That's not ideal though.

Both will fit, if you have a Stream or Bolero at the moment you need the Erisin to fit the original fascia, if Columbus then the Xtrons, the only thing I think there is an issue with is a battery drain but you just have to switch a wire around, can't fault my Erisin coming up to 2 years with it now.

Mine was a doddle to fit as it uses no external boxes like some, it just plugs in to the original harness.

Do you have a pre-facelift?

Mine is the Limited Edition, 09, it's sort of in between, it's a pre facelift but has a few facelift interior bits, the stream is the same dimensions as the Bolero I had so the Erisin will fit, I know of a few people with 06-08 on the Facebook VRS club that have fitted the same one on my recommendation, the one you want is this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-DVD-For-Skoda-Octavia-Radio-Android-8-0-Bluetooth-GPS-DAB-Wifi-3G-8-7826GB/113163907480?hash=item1a59183198:g:b3oAAOSwHrlcOv9J
