4 x Bike Rack

Featured Replies

Hi guys, having trouble lookingfor a range of 4 x Bike carrier for my 2014 Skoda Superb Saloon.

Would appreciate some help!!!

I'm fairly sure Thule and Atera do towball mounted 4-bike carriers.

I don't have a tow bar.

Four bikes is a lot of weight to hang on the boot lid.

I'd be tempted to put two on the roof and two on the bootlid.

If you want all four on the back then investing in a tow bar would be worthwhile. Fixed tow bars can be had, fitted, for less than £300 these days.

I  have this four bike rack, made in Germany and quite a bit cheaper than the usual suspects...

Just be wary of the weight with four bikes on a towball though as the carrier plus the weight of the bikes could exceed the rating of the towbar.  I have a Thule Hang-On carrier which, with the four bikes we have is just under the rating for the removable bar we have on our Octy 2 (I've had everything on the bathroom scales!)...   with a rack the one shown above I think it'd be quite a bit over.

The tow bar rating, according to the manual is 75Kg...

The carrier weighs 20Kg leaving 55Kg for the bikes themselves.

Voodoo Bizango -  12.7Kg

Cube Access - 13.4Kg

Pendleton Junier Hanberry - 10Kg

Apollo Claw - 9Kg

Total 45.1Kg

So I have around 10Kg spare which should be enough to allow for the two kids bikes to grow in size and weight as they get older.

Can't believe our youngest's steel bike weights two thirds of the weigh of my adult aluminium bike!

Yep - I think I'm closer to the limit than you as my bike is an old Reynolds frame and has additional stuff like pannier racks and a trailgater on it, so is a lot heavier, and my wife's, whilst an Ally frame isn't exactly light.   I'd agree re the kids bikes though - my youngest's bike is quite heavy, so it's only really my eldest's bike that is in any way light as it's a modern aluminium fame with lighter weight components.

Having said all that also bear in mind the offset comment above - ie if the centre of gravity of your rack is over 60cm from the ball (and it looks like it might be close with your set-up) then the permissible weight on the ball is only 37.5kg...   (Eeek!!)

Thanks very much for the advice.  I did have a look at one of those.  Ill have to consider a Tow Bar or hang on a year and wait for my new Kodiaq.  Lovely car by the way!!

thanks to everyone for your input and advice.  Always get great advice in this forum.  Much appreciated peeps!

Thanks, although as it happens, your thread and its comments prompted me to look a little more into the max permissible loads that the tow bar can handle.

Not a lot as it happens, so a tow bar might not be the obvious choice!
