diesel fuel filter change nightmare - fixed

so let me tell you a story...

 

did a service on my 1.6 tdi and I got to the dreaded fuel filter bit. I did what I normally do, unhook the old filter (i only have the one with two lines) plugged the new one in (empty). Unhooked the line that goes to the high-pressure pump, stuck a funnel in it, added diesel to the new filter until it came out on the other side. Plugged it back to the HPFP. Job done!  It worked a treat the last 10 times I've done it. Except the b@5tard won't start this time, at all! Cranked and cranked and cranked...back to the laptop, research research, crank, crank nothing. Dead battery, 10 hours later still nothing...

 

Long story short, unclip very gently one of the lines that goes to a injector, crank a few times until you get the engine bay nice and filthy with diesel, so you know that no air pockets are stuck on the fuel line.  Then cranck a few times and voila. She's running again. I'm sure some of you have done it very gracefully like a pro. Let me know how you guys do it so I can avoid this mess next time (  I haven't got VCDS).

 

now time to clean the garage floor of all this diesel...

Glad you got it sorted. That's the way I'd have done it. Fickle things diesels!

 

My wife used to have an Audi A2 and someone thought it would be a good idea to locate the fuel filter in a recess under the car near the back N/S wheel. Hated doing that job, as you had to remove an aluminium heat shield held on with steel fasteners which invariably turned to dust when you touched them.

 

My Allroad uses VCDS to prime filter - so definitely the way to go.

man I used to have an A2 1.4 petrol. Gutted that I sold it.

...On my 1.4, same filter as above, I just remove the old, connect the new and start her up! No bleeding, no fuss, no mess! Its in a very easy access area, just behind the offside headlight and its a very easy task. A muppet can do it, if I can!

We had the 1.4TDI (75bhp). Audi did a 90bhp version too. Ahead if it's time in my opinion, aluminium space frame body (similar to early A8) and very frugal. Audi treated the A2 with contempt if I'm honest. They replaced it with the God-awful A1 that you could lose at any Asda car park.

 

Bit if a classic car now, but getting on a bit, and rose-tinted specs aside the ride wasn't great. I rebuilt the suspension on ours, new brakes, etc. Suffered from countless door strap issues, EGR reverberation, shocking headlights, failed open-sky sunroof (we didn't have one but well documented), peeling interior switches, etc.

 

Good forum on A2OC for those that refuse to part with them!

I always thought that the A2 was a bit of a vanity project for Audi, and then they discovered that building that car for the small car market just did not work, a bit like what ended up being the Smart for 2 that VW planned to replace the Lupo with - and the Matix(sp?)  that was meant to be a cheap Fiat.

 

None of that stops me wondering if I can not find a space in my life to rejuvenate a tired A2 though, used to be someone in the Polo forum looking for help/advice in swopping the 1.4 petrol engine for an EA211 1.2TSI 110PS and 6SPD gearbox!

Why that number of changes - I'm mystified. Are you into super high mileage?  This is not a critical comment - just an observation.

I must have done it like 4 times haha it supposes it was a metaphoric 10 times rather than a true one. You got me ;)

you can also unhook the air intake and spray a little diesel in while a friend cranks it over. once it fires it'll suck through diesel from the new filter  and job done

Just done mine (1.9tdi) but after reconnecting the fuel pipes I switch the ignition on and off 5 times without starting the engine. it has worked well so I will stick to this method.

i've done that like 20 times (literally) ignition on-off but still there was a bubble somewhere

Did this on the wife's Polo on Saturday. First clamped the two hoses gently with small G clamps. Slipped off both pipes. Filled new filter with diesel in Old filter using a small bit of tubing (outlet -> inlet). Put hoses back on. released clamps. Started on the nail.

I just unplugged mine, out with the old in with the new prime the car 8/10 times and then turned on no issues. took under 10 mins... No idea why you couldn't get it to start.
