Snow/Ice and Autoparking Wipers not a happy mix!

Featured Replies

Given Hampshire got hit with a fair amount of snow recently the autopark wipers seems to have been a bit freaked out by snow/ice trapped in the space where they normally go. Wipers still work just fine just don't appear to be parking themselves properly anymore.  Anyone know how to reset them to get them to try parking themselves again? The snow deployed itself from the roof into the space as the wipers were already working to keep the screen clear of snow/water basically.

No idea, but could i suggest a dustpan brush to remove snow from the roof and bonnet before you start the car in future.

safer for everyone and saves a problem too.

Not an answer to the question.

But save issue in the future maybe by parking the car and put the wiper in the Service Position'.

Car stopped, ignition off, then flick the wiper stalk and wiper stay pointing up.

Then when clearing the snow or ice at the bottom of the screen before using the wiper you only have to lift them off the glass.

Thanks, that helps to know for future reference, of course something else that needed to be learnt from a relatively new owner. Also not leaving the wipers in auto helps here too!

It's a tips like this that make a difference lol thanks

Well I agree, but it’s a personal bugbear of mine, especially after getting covered in whole roofs of snow last week.

Careful with a brush...

I actually don't get why some people will never use a brush wash yet will happily use a broom to clear the snow! Aaagh, the scratches!

If you like scratched paintwork that is.

Yes, but what other way would you remove snow in an acceptable time?

People here seem to talk about snow like some soft stuff and it is as it falls.

If it falls and then starts thawing as the day goes on then freezes again over night and maybe slides down the windscreen into the scuttle panel and air intake it can be very hard ice.

There are roads still closed tonight, and they have been closed during the passed days due to drifting snow.

all a bit of a chaos when a few days of winter hits parts of the UK.

Seems every winter the same old same old and people never remember all the past winters they have experienced as drivers.

In Buxton, Derbyshire,  yesterday. Drizzle on top of snow and ice. Wonderful.

Or hose it off :D

A suitable soft dustpan or specific car brush is what is used all over Europe.

As long as you keep it for the car, you’re fine.

Plus, not being able to see as it slides down the screen will do more than potentially leaving swirl marks the paintwork.

When we arrived in Sauze D’Oulx on Saturday  this greeted us.

Brushing is the *only* way to get snow off. Takes less than five to clear 15cm of the stuff. Ask me tonight, I'll be doing it again.  Use a scraper to break the crust of ice... then downwards on the windscreen and bonnet. to the back on the roof. Clear the front screen, remove the snowpack under the wiper mech, then move round clockwise. Clear the rear screen correctly on a hatch because it won't clear iself. Then brush off the side windows, ensure the mirrors are clear, round to the other side, repeat. Kick the snow out of teh wheel arches / off the mudflaps when parking up. Make sure you also clear any lumps in the wheels or things will be lumpy on teh road.

IIRC my Mk2 Octavia did this once. No damage appeared to have been  done and the parking position went back to normal. The stop position of the blades when on intermittent wipe varied as well.

Can't recall if the Mk3 does the same.

Cos the car is just RENTED, at the end of its term it goes back.

Regards wipers, turn off the Auto wipers ( it doesn't restart promptly enough) & using a luke warm kettle will completely de-ice the screen, I also use the luke warm water on the headlights as LED headlights DON'T defrost themselves & especially at my speeds I like to see & be seen.

Wow ! Using hot water on a icy screen (either front or rear), !?! I wouldn't do that to avoid cracking the screen (due to thermal shock) if you didn't notice a gravel impact (even a small one)...
