Rattle from front of my fabia

Featured Replies

Please please help!!!

I have a rattle from the front of my fabia w reg. I have been to a garage twice and they cant find anything wrong with it. I have searched this site and have given the mechanics some idea to what people on here have said. They have checked the anti roll bushes and also the roll bar link rods BUT they say they are alright. When i go over a speed bump or rough road you can here it. It sounds like two pieces of metal knocking together. The garage assures me that there is nothing hanging off or loose but I am not convinced they also said that the car looked like it had a newish roll bar and said if i wanted to find out what the noise is I should take it to my local Skoda dealer.

WHAT DO YOU THINK PLEASE HELP

The noise is doing my head in!!!!!!!!!

Still think its an anti roll bar myself ;)

Can you get a picture of it from under the wheel arch for me?

Thanks for the reply but like i said they ASSURE me the roll bar is okay??

I have had a look at it myself and it looks quite new.

I have had a service 2 weeks ago and am not sure if they may have cocked something up on it. Also these garages always worry me as they dont seem to know much about the underneath of Skoda's.

I dont really want to take it to a skoda dealer but im just worried it will get worse and cause a lot of damage to the car.

I had a similar problem - there is a bush to the rear of the wishbone mounted in the chassis crossmember. Get them to check that? The ARB seem to be easy to check but the crossmember bushes are deceptive. I initially thought the clunking in my motor was engine mountings but replacing the bush (with great difficulty) sorted the problem.

Thanks for that. Where is that!!!!!

They did have it raised on a ramp and they proded all the bushes but there seemed to be a bush in the front of the car centrally and i am wondering if that is the bush you are meaning

It may be worth getting a picture for Mr Lummox as above, I think you will find him very knowledgable in this kind of situation ;)

It would be almost like having your very own Master Technician in the comfort of your own home - Free of charge!!

I have an 01 1.9TDI and it has had a rattle from the front nearside suspension for about 18months. The Skoda dealer in Aylesbury has had the car on numerous occasions and has replaced the strut, the top mount, the anitroll bar, the drop links and a bush on the wishbone. The noise occurs if I go over a hump with the nearside wheel but is silent if I go over the hump with the offside wheel.

It seems that jacking the car up so that the wheel is off the ground and the suspension falls to its full travel clears the fault for about 20 miles after which it re-occurs.

I have now given up on the garage and will maybe take off the strut and have a look at the top mount when the weather gets a bit warmer. A problem I have found with the car is the lack of a Haynes Manual to give info on torque settings.

I will monitor this string with interest- best of luck.

A few pics of a Fabia ARB today...

You can see above how the collar that stops sideways movement has come off the bar itself and slid up, thus allowing the bar to move sideways.

And after a little while the collar splits and falls out like this. I would like to point out however although this is rather annoying as its knocks on the subframe it is not dangerous and not something you should panic about if your Fabia does it. Modified ARB's come complete with new mountings and brackets.

Lummox you are a star. Do you think this is the problem?????

Can you confirm if the split collar comes with the Rubber Bush/Mountings or if it comes attached to the ARB itself? Mine has done exactly the same.

Thanks in advance,

Phil.

My skoda garage didnt want to change the ARB when this thing happened to my fabia. They said they had good experience fitting new brushes to the old bar... seems to have done the trick in my case. And saved me some cash as well :)

It's the anti roll bar. I have the same problem. The every day garages seem unable to solve it. You will have to take it to skoda dealer. Mines booked in

Did Skoda start to put a modified arb into the Fabia from the factory once they realized there was a problem? If so, at what point?

Not that im aware of.

I don't think they have.. according to the part numbers they did an 18mm/19mm and a 20mm.. I'm guessing the 20mm comes on the VRS, perhaps the 19mm is the after market replacement for the 18mm when it fails.. who knows..

Cheers.

Phil.
