Dynamic Light Assist - Xenon headlights

Featured Replies

I'm confused!  As I understand it, the system adjusts the beam pattern based on speed - and automatically switches between high beam and dipped beam dependent on speed.  I believe it also reacts to oncoming traffic leaving the light on main beam but masking out the part which dazzles the oncoming driver making there effectively  three modes main, nearly main and dipped.  (I have to say the oncoming driver doesn't seem to agree he's not dazzled!!!)

Assuming I'm correct - so far so good. But, if I'm driving  on dipped beam and choose to use main beam I sometimes, but always,  need to push the lever away from me twice. Is this normal - and why?

Beam pattern is the AFS function, standard with all (VAG) BiXenon lights and not part of DLA.

When you push the stalk forward you are enabling DLA.

When you push it forward a second time you are overriding DLA so no masking of the main beam occurs. It's now like a normal main beam and you will dazzle oncoming traffic if you don't manually turn main beam off or cycle back to DLA.

Each push forward cycles between DLA and non-DLA main beam modes. The DLA status is displayed on the instrument panel -  main beam symbol with an 'A' in it if DLA is active.

A pull back on the stalk will turn main beam off. It will only turn off DLA if DLA is the current mode AND it has main beam currently turned on.

You need to be travelling 40 mph or more before DLA will turn on main beam.

Thanks Billy! I understand that - have you thought of writing an instruction manual?  I just wish it was all a like more intuitive!  Hopefully, one can spare a few seconds to occasionally look at the road while operating this computer, sorry, car!

Which system do you actually have?. I see you list an SEL as your car.

Brief summary is that all SEL have AFS lighting. This changes the pattern dependent on speed, rain etc but does not auto switch between  high/low beam.

There is then an option for high beam assist which simply adds the auto switching between high and low beam.

Finally there is the higher option of adaptive shadow technology ( or smart light assist as Skoda calls it.). This is the option that BillyJim refers to above.

With the auto systems I find the minimum speed for full beam can delay the switch to main beam later than I might switch manually. Also the ever changing shadow of smart light assist can be mesmerising at first. However as a system it is the best I have used and never had any issues with blinding others. I switch to full auto and leave it to do it's own thing

p.s. It is worth read of the manual section to check what can limit the auto system.  Drive modes, wipers  working for 4 minutes, sport mode for cornering lights etc.

Buggered if I know!  I have not selected any options - but I do have a system that does automatic dipping. Looking at the spec though - I think you're right and I only have the High Beam assist (or Light Assist with High Beam control as it is listed in the spec) - the dipping I noticed when someone approached maybe was due to my speed not smart light assist as this is standard only on the L&K like you have.  But at one stage it did seem to be somewhere between dipped and main beam...  I need to experiment more - it was my first time out at night and I was tired after a 4 hour motorway drive!

Edit - I have read the manual - if only it were in English...   It would also help if they used the same terms in the manual as they do in the specification too!  In the manual Headlight Assistant is what the spec calls Light Assist with High Beam control.

The manual is not the easiest. Try this for an idea of how a standard AFS system works. It is a typical system by Hella and nort necessarily the exact one supplied with Skoda but the idea is the same. Note that the video shows auto mode without use of high beam. (i.e. it is all a variation of low beam). High beam is still selected on top of this. So Light Assist is the auto switch between high and low beam.

Thus you have several beam patterns in auto low beam and then your high beam pattern if you select high beam (white symbol or similar in the dash display (not sure as I cant rememeber whether it is a green or white light).

Still a very good system (my first S3 had light assist) IMO. I said at the time it was the best system for lighting the road that I had driven. The smart system takes things a stage further but is not to evryones taste as they prefer the manual control of when high beam is required for their style of driving. Hope the video helps a bit

pop ur bonnet open and have a look at the sticker at the top of ur headlight, if its part  number ends in "B" - u have SLA (which does the fancy high beam masking).

if it ends in "A", then u don't have SLA, but the version that can only go as far as High Beam Assist (HBA)

non-SLA version:-

Thanks for that - yes, non SLA version. The dipping when a car approached must have coincided with a speed reduction!

If you have HBA the headlight symbol in the maxi-dot has a small "a" in the middle. Select lights to auto and push the high beam toggle all the way forward. If you don't see the "a" then you don't have HBA but it can be enabled through vcds or obdeleven.

I'll check

I have the A in the middle - so just High Beam Assist (so I do get the speed related dipping and main beam)  but not SLA

  • 1 year later...

Hi all - it's a bit necro to write here I know.
But I'm getting a used Superb MY18 (12/2017) two days from now, and it does not have the SLA capable headlight.
So I'm wondering if anyone has done a retrofit of the "B" lamp, coming from an "A" and if it's possible or are there any things I need to look out for?

Someone on here has done it and it sounded like a very expensive and very technically challenging job requiring various coding tools to get working (maybe dealer level access as well but not sure?)
