Lights stuck in very dipped state

Featured Replies

It happened to me today that Bi-Xenon AFS lights got stuck dipped very hard (light-dark line was approx 5-10m ahead of me). I tried turning lights off and on again but it didn’t help. On first stop I turned the car off and on again (I’m a software enigeneer :)) and it started working properly.

Anyone had that happen? Is it an early sign of some failure or just a coincidence?

I have had this happen twice (in 52K miles) but only on one light, same as you turn the engine off and start again and it works perfectly again.

I had it happen with the BiXenon AFS of my Mk.II Superb.

Dealer said AFS motor was broken but then discovered it had actually gone out-of-synch so they performed a software reset which cured it.

It didn't recur in the remaining two years of ownership.

There was a software update for this issue, ask your dealer.

Also IIRC it seems associated with low temperatures and low battery volts

as @xman stated - there is a sofware fix for the headlights on the Superb mk3.

The TP number was 94K1.

the fix alters the start-up sequence of the headlight "dance", during ignition, thus preventing the scenario where the headlight remain "stuck" in the downward position.

Thanks! I checked Skoda’s recalls for my VIN and got “Dear customer, No relevant recall campaigns have been launched by ŠKODA for the entered VIN”. My car is MY2019 and was manufactured to specs in Oct 2018 so I would assume that this fix is already applied. As it happened only once I don’t plan on contacting my dealer yet.

Also found another thread (searching for 94K1) where someone also had it happen on MY2019 car so I’ll follow up there and see if they got it sorted out.

Mine had the fix applied some time ago (2017 car).  A couple of days ago it did it again, but much lower than before.  Will wait and see if it is an isolated event.

As previously mentioned, there is a software update available to cure this.

Workaround:

  • Turn on the ignition without starting the engine
  • Wait for Xenon dance to complete
  • Start engine.

I've had this a few times on my MY2018 car, but only ever the right headlight.

Turn off and on again has always sorted it.

My car is MY2019. The dance starts on starting the engine, not on ignition. FYI: I don’t have Kessy if rekevant.

same with MY17 and other model years, it only does the dance when the engine is fired up, i.e. ignition.

off -> ignition (if keys present and foot depressing the brake)

headlights must b in "auto" position before ignition if u want to see the dance.

it won't do the dance with just "on".

off -> on  (if keys not present or foot not on the brake)

I'm guessing this must be a kessy thing then. On my MY17 with kessy the dance starts at ignition on (first press of the start button, foot not on brake). It's not easy to see, so I may be wrong, but if I'm impatient and start it during the dance, it seems the dance pauses slightly as if it is being sequenced with the engine start. I believed (though happy to be corrected) this was part of the software update 94k1 that was designed to fix the "too-dipped" problem.
