Octavia 68 plate 1.6d

Featured Replies

What are the oil change periods for a 1.6d 120ps dsg octavia?

i have always done all diesels every 15,000 miles, i know Skoda say "variable", my son has free "services" but i doubt skoda will change oil very often

... when the computer says so. Every two years or 30000km, I suspect.

Whilst the variable/long-life service schedule says you can go up to 20K miles between oil changes, I haven't spoken to one mechanic who's said that's a good thing.

For the sake of £40-£50 they've all recommended an oil change at 12 months/10K miles (well 9300 or so if you go by what the infotainment system says).

I only do around 10K-11K miles per year but I'll be getting the oil changed annually for peace of mind and hopefully many years/miles of trouble free motoring

I currently have the 3rd vRS I've owned that has been on variable servicing.

I'm happy with this arrangement - there really isn't the need to replace fluids as often as in the past. There is no way manufacturers would risk any damage due to infrequent servicing, so plenty of research will have been completed.

I've certainly never had a "infrequent parts change" related issue.

The car should report it wants a service anywhere between 12k & 20k miles, I think I've tended to average 17k - 18k before it has popped up and warned me it wants doing.

You do need to remember that with a Skoda/VW garage, all variable services are considered major - so unlike the fixed length you don't flip flop between minor/major.

If the arrangement worries, pop to your dealer and they'll change you back to fixed 12k.

I bought a new 15 plate Superb 4 years ago and Skoda said I was wrong to do it every 15k...

excuse me, its MY car dude

do we think Skoda filters are any better than factors?

Always OEM filters. My car is on 102k miles and has always been on variable with services every 18k or so. Still runs and drives a dream. Part of me wants to set it to fixed and do the oil every 9400 miles but then it would need 4 oil changes per year!! It’s been fine on variable.

I’ve bought a car which has done 77k

its had 4 interval services and a brake fluid change in that time if this helps at all?

Skoda did everything

OEM is probably Mann, anyway; I can't see there being much difference between a high level set of filters, whether they're Mann, Bosch or someone else's name on it. If the oil is regularly warmed through and has no condensation (so when it is driven, it's truly warm) and it's not pushed when cold, I don't see an issue with the higher mileages between services. OTOH, if there's lots of city miles involved and short journeys, then I see additional services as being a good move if engine longevity is of interest.

The Swift we recently bought has a recommendation for an oil change after the running in period, so that's exactly what it's going in for on Tuesday, mainly because that's subjected to a lot of short stuff and I'd like it to last.

You can ask the dealer to reset to one-year intervals if you want it that way.
