Headlamps fogging up

Featured Replies

Does anyone's headlamp and fog lamps fog up with condensation during a drive? Am starting to drive the car a bit more and today noticed both the headlamps and smaller fog lamps fogged up. It's been a damp cold day today. When I left the car parked up for a while it cleared a little and then when I went back for another drive it fogged up again. If it happened to all my front lights then there must be others who should be experiencing the same? Bad seals? Unique weather today :wondering:?

They are not sealed units mine do it even the headlamps. There are air/drain holes plus where the bulbs fit are not sealed.

From the Kodiaq manual, suspect Karoq manual has same....

Yea I've got it in all 4 front headlamps and fog lights. When I wake up in the morning it would mostly disappear and then start again on the next drive. So you reckon nothing to worry about?

Thanks Kenny. Ever seen it on your Kodiaq?

I have owned many cars in my time, my karoq @£30k 16 months old suffers with condensation in one headlamp. All my other cars have had glass headlamps, not cheap plastic like Skoda. Wish I'd known about this problem before buying, would have saved my money.

Think you’ll find most cars, and some very much more money than what you’ve paid with LED lights suffer from this problem, and not just Skoda.

The other cars you’ve had that had old school glass headlights, ( that were probably banned by elf and safety) , would have halogen or xenon lamps that produced heat that dispelled moisture, LED lights run cooler and all suffer from misting.

I think you'll find that glass headlights were replaced by high-impact plastic headlights many year ago to avoid stones cracking them. When I had glass ones, I used to attach plastic shields over them to over breakages! And the move from halogen or xenon bulbs to LEDs was driven by their increased reliability and lower power needs - the latter being part of the drive for reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions where many tiny improvements combine to make a significant improvement.

I agree that LED headlamps are an improvement over halogen or xenon. What I'm concerned with is the fact that dealers, so I've heard, think that headlamps getting misted up is normal. Surely the condensation will, in a long run cause electrical failure. Men can be sent to the moon, but Skoda cannot make sealed headlamps. I have had many cars over the years, and never suffered headlamp condensation.

Plastic is much safer in an accident, if a pedestrian is hit especially. Broken pieces will not be as sharp. Also less likely to break if a stone hits them or a minor shunt.

I have been a bit harsh in my comments. Never had plastic headlamps in a car before, and my last car was only five years old. I went for a drive today and left my headlights on. Yes they did clear.

Thank you to all the members who commented. I admit, you learn something new each day.

What car did you own before that had glass headlamps..?

Weren't Glass heights changed on new cars many years ago?

My car that had glass headlamps was a 2015 Kia 4 tech. Not that many years ago. The Skoda Karoq is still the best car I've had. Please don't knock readers opinions, we are all entitled to our views.
