Gearbox problem

Featured Replies

Sometimes when I reverse my octy vRS, the gearstick wont come out of reverse gear. This happens roughly 1 in 10 times and there is no pattern as to when it does it, hot, cold, straight or round a bend. I have tried to coax it out by reversing a bit more, switching off the engine, pumping the clutch etc all to no avail. The only way it comes out of gear is by pulling hard. Are there any guides out there on how to set up the cable linkage?

The car is a 2002 with 94000 miles, so I was thinking of changing the oil to see if that would help. What oil should I be using?

I think I remember someone saying a long time ago that it might be something to do with the reversing light switch, did I imagine that or is it worth trying?

Please someone help me sort this out, it gets a bit embarrasing coming out of a space in Asda's and then just sitting there witht the reverse lights on!

i doubt the reverse switch has anything to do with it, sounds like either bad oil, poorly clutch or poorly slave cylinder for the brakes. but i'm not a mechanic :)

Sounds like an issue with the selector mech, at 94k is could well be worn. Or maybe an issue internal to the box with the reverse gear/idler.
