Mysterious electronic buzz

Featured Replies

Here's something that my dealer couldn't figure out. Basically when the fan (doesn't need to be air con) is on, you get this electrical buzz that comes from behind the glove box area. I went to the demo car and heard it too. It comes and goes and sometimes playing with the fan speed, on off triggers it again.

So wondering anyone out there who managed to find a cure or knows what the garage needs to do to stop it? Thanks!

Mine does it not noticed it till you mentioned it don't think its a problem i don't bother about click's knocks and bumps

It's the infotainment unit in the glove box I believe.

The unit in the glove box only consists of two SD cards slots on the SE-L doesnt it? Is there a reason why they would make a buzzing sound?

It's more like some electronic part that's linked to the fan that's hidden behind the glove box - only happens with fan on.

Have you tried turning the glovebox cooling dial up and down to see if that has any effect?

Im assuming that just opens/ closes a vent but worth trying.

Yea that didn't make a difference.

Intriguing....just went out to mine and tried to replicate that issue but mine doesnt do so.....no buzzing.

Just listened to your attaxhment again, sounds like possibly a relay. There appear to be two relays at the bottom of that fuse box.

Thanks for checking Breezy. Now that I've mentioned it, you 'may' notice it one day when you're in your car, fan on, radio off, parked up or waiting by the traffic lights. As it does it half the time, not hearing it now may mean you indeed don't have it or just not this time. Of course I do hope it's the former :)

I had same issue. Go into the air con menu using menu on fan control knob.

Select options on bottom right of screen. If you have a tick in "auxiliary heater" untick this.

This stopped the noise for me.

Hi Bobspence. I went to the air con menu but couldnt find an auxiliary heater option. Only air recirculation and windscreen heating. Is your Karoq a UK spec? Thanks.

Yes UK spec but mine is 1.6TDI

I would disable the auto screen heating and see if any different. You can always re activate

Screen heating (amongst other things) is operated through relay 646 and heated rear screen through 645. If switching on/off these functions affects the buzzing sound it seems that the noise is coming from one or both of the relays.

Next time I shall put my hand on those relays to see if I feel any vibrations off them. Thanks

Buzz doesn't seem to come from where the numbers 645 and 646 are. And turning off auto air recirculation and auto windscreen heating didn't make a difference :(

I think the intermittent bleeping/clicking are the heater/ventilation flaps adjusting.

Try turning the climate off completely, or whack the temp down to min or up to max.

Can climate control be off without turning the fan off? I'm already on manual fan speed.

No I don't think so. The temperature regulation is automatic unless set to max or min. The temperature and direction flaps are controlled by stepper motors and are constantly readjusting to main the temperature selected.

Sometimes I wonder what's the best thing to do when I have a lazy Skoda mechanic. Send Skoda UK the video and ask them for the solution so I can pass it to my local dealership?

Has your dealer acknowledged that they can hear the noise?

And importantly, have they confirmed it isn't normal?

If their demonstrator does it too, I fear you'll only get the 'characteristic of the car' excuse.

I was in the car with the master tech listening to it together. I called back after a few days and he just told me it wasn't doing it at that moment. Sure enough it wasn't doing it at the point I collected it, until I was already driving on my way home :D. I was ready to just leave it and then thought it would be interesting to find out what Skoda UK's stance was for lazy or inexperienced technicians out there who just don't know what to do. I said I could send them the video and  they just need to tell me what it is and I'll pass on the message. Their advice was to take it to another retailer for a second opinion - which isn't a bad idea. There's one close by to me - they don't sell new cars but are an authorised Skoda repairer on the Skoda website. So I'll give them a go next time.
