Tyre, MPG and DPF regen

Featured Replies

had the fabia mk2 1.6tdi for 7 years, and serviced as scheduled.

last November changed the four falkens to the Michelin energy saver plus 195/55r15. fuel economy is improved not too much around 3or4 mpg

since then, i didn't notice the regular dpf regen when the fuel gauge hits one of last small 3 bars before empty (depends on last fill)

On lower (most of  time is 3rd) gear, if the dpf started regen, i can fell the car  getting laggy to the gas. its happends almost every 10 or 12 days since i have the car.

doing the same 27miles commute route, A road then 20 miles motorway then 4 miles main road of the town. car is just over 70k miles.

will that mean the regen around 500-mile extended to 600 or even further?  or any other possible reason?

cheers

Regeneration is not controlled by fuel level.  It is just coincidence if you have seen it each time the gauge reaches the bottom.  An active regeneration is done when sensors detect that the filter contains a certain amount of carbon, but it is also done after 350 miles or so even if one hasn't been triggered by carbon loading.

Mine regenerates every 200-350 miles depending on the sort of running it gets.   However, if your car has had the emissions "fix" (mine hasn't!) regenerations will be more frequent.

Signs that tell me one is in progress are:

  • Increased tickover revs - around 1000 rpm vs normal 750 (NB tickover also runs at 1000 rpm in cold weather until the engine gets good and hot)
  • slight change in engine note when accelerating from standstill - almost as if the exhaust is blowing across the top of an empty bottle.
  • very slight hesitancy on pick-up when changing up the gears
  • oil temperature (on maxidot) increases rapidly from a norm of 85-95C to 95-110C
  • exhaust emission has a faint smell a little like the smell of burnt aviation fuel you get around airports
  • the exhaust system gets hot - you can feel the heat if you stand at the left rear wheel, it is accompanied by the smell of hot rubber

If you don't have the maxidot display then the only regeneration signs occur when at a standstill or moving off, so your 20 mile motorway cruise is plenty for a regeneration to run its course completely unnoticed.

Thanks for the useful info, it seems clear all my confusions on the the dpf regeneration things. Some of those signs happen together every couple of weeks or months.

What I notice most is it looks like a good and economic tyre( as the tyre label shows fuel consumption B vs previously E) not only help the fuel consumption but keeps other parts last as possible. On the long run, it may pay for itself really well. I always thought mid range is the best choice.
