engine cutting out after 5 seconds

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

I have a Skoda Superb SE TDI   Registered 10.2008 Diesel

I start the car as instructed as per  manual , Sometimes not everytime when i start the engine first thing in morning it starts for about 5 seconds then cuts out, i then turn it  off  then start again and it  runs perfect,  Any ideas please as what the problem may be, Thanks

Get an OBD reader, and check for fault codes. Could be a sensor.

If its only when the car has been stood I would guess at a small amount of air getting in the fuel system somewhere.

Thankyou for the replies guys, The OBD reader seems a good idea, Only problem is would i be able to use it myself, I am very handy at doing various things but i am not sure if i could use the OBD reader correctly,

Hi Xman,   Thanks for information, I Think i will buy the first one streetwize one it don't look so complicated and maybe easier for me to use, The carista looks very impressive but i would worry that i would do damage to the electrics if i got that one and pressed the wrong info in,

Hi Xman, Just had a look at the carista app link you just sent me, It appears that when you do a search for my skoda MKI 2008 it is not fully supported

The streetwize readers are also available from many other outlets such as EuroCarParts, even from Argos but a lot more expensive.

May not find anything wrong in which case you know all sensors and electrics are working ok.

A cheap but useful tool to have in the garage. Can be used on almost all makes and models of car 2002 on. Needed in the age of electronics on cars

So the streetwize is the safer bet. It can also be used on all makes and models. I used mine the other day on a Vauxhall Zarifa with a check engine light on, it found an oxygen sensor fault, I reset it and so far its stayed off so must have been an intermittent or dodgy connector  (I disconnected the sensor and plugged it back in)

Hi Xman,  Thanks for all your help, I am going to order the streetwize now,  I suppose they will give me instruction  manual with it, Will let you know how i get on M8, Thanks again, ,

It comes with an instruction manual, don't worry.

Possible that the immobilizer isn't seeing the key properly straight away. The car will start and then stop, But you will know this from the error codes. More likely air in the fuel line though.

Hi Guys

Just to let you know how i got on, First i ordered a obd reader and not here till tomorrow, This morning had to call AA Homestart  out to my house,  Car was terrible  same fault as before only 10 times worse, when it did start it keep sart stop start stop , The AA guy put a reader on to test for faults,  The attachment is the details of fault

After he pushed all connections and wiring to the main relays it solved the problem, So i asked him to follow me to auto electrics for them to check it, Waiting for the outcome,

Anymore ideas from you guys, Thankyou

HI guys

Just  had garage phone me up after 5 weeks to say they have finally found the fault with Skoda Superb, They tell me it is the Engine Control Unit   and costs  about  £1.500. for a new one and it has to be done by a skoda dealer, Any of you know if this price sounds  correct, Thanks in advance for previous comments

which garage has it been at? I would deffo want second opinions before throwing £1500 at a new ECU

Hi Guys,

it took them 4 weeks to find fault, the problem was they could not get the car to fault, on a good few ocassions only in the mornings first thing when it was cold it would fault, they found the fault with ECU by removing from car and putting in fridge over night, if it was cold the car would not start, sent it away to recondition it, cost  £450 including labour, So happy man now,

Thankyou to all you people who gave me advice ,
