AQW Engine Aux Tensioner

Featured Replies

Hi guys, first post here, did run a search on this but didn't turn anything up, apologies if I missed something..

Anyone with experience on the AQW engines able to advise on a part to buy?

Looking to get aux belt tensioner to remedy clicking noise (which I understand is a common fault on these) but have no idea what the difference is between these two items:

They obviously look pretty different to the untrained eye (mine being extremely untrained!)

Anyone able to help on that?

Welcome along!

Does your car have A/C?

Your first link shows the actual tensioner unit. Although they describe it as a pulley, it's not a pulley at all, it simply applies torsion to the rod that has the pulley on the other end.

Your second link shows the pulley and rod.  Pulley and rod is part number 047903306C. Tensioner is part number 047903315B.

The above items are for AQW engines with A/C.

If your car has no A/C, the pulley is part number 047145276. The bolt that holds this pulley has a left-hand thread and is 21mm. It requires a drop of Loctite on it when refitting. Torque is 20Nm.

NOTE: These engines are notorious for noisy timing chains and the noise comes from the same area. So make sure it's definitely the belt tensioner. The timing chains on these engines have no tensioner by design, so when the chains stretch they thrash about and make a chattering noise. Never heard of one breaking though.

Yes my vehicle does have AC, and thanks for the info on the timing chain, if this doesn't resolve issue I'll look at that next , thanks!

No probs.

How many miles has it done?

Hit 50k this week.

OK. If the chain has never been changed it will be rattling Mine's on 70,000 and it's rattling but it doesn't bother me too much. I fitted an underbonnet sound damper pad from a vRS and it helps quite a bit. They will go on forever like that but you could get it changed if it bothers you.
