Octavia horn not working

Featured Replies

Hi all, I'd be very appreciative if I could get some help with my car :)

I have a 2016 Skoda Octavia 1.2l, and a little while ago i could hear a clicking occasionally when I turned the steering wheel. Then one day when i turned the ignition on the horn would not stop blaring! I managed to get it to stop (with my unscientific method of whacking the horn). When i got home i turned the car off and on - and again the horn would not stop blaring. I subsequently removed the fuse for the horn from the relay. I then noticed that the airbag light was also on - so both the horn and the airbag were not working now.

Today, I had a mechanic run a diagnostic on it. His english wasn't great so I found it hard to get clear answers from him but the way he explained it was that the fixing that allowed the horn to work whilst steering had worn away and it was getting stuck. With this skoda I couldn't just replace the horn - but would need the horn and the airbag replaced. This would cost £360 in parts plus £60 in labor.

I wanted to lookup the part myself, to see if the cost he quoted was accurate and if maybe i could find a cheaper alternative but given my lack of knowledge on cars I've struggled to find what part i need.

Any advice on where i can find the part number? Also is the price he quoted in the right ball park?

Any help would be appreciated.

The Horn Push on the Steering Wheel

is connected to the Steering Column electrically by a slipring. A fixed contact with a spring to maintain the force rubs against a rotating contact as the wheel rotates.

Lots of spares around the usual Auction sites

Just be careful driving it until it's fixed, if you're involved in an accident and a ambulance chasing lawyer finds it not working, you could find yourself in the brown stuff right up to your neck.

As they'll say that you should have sounded your horn as a warning.

Thanks for the response guys! I'll contact the garage again and see if they can confirm which bit needs replacing. If its the "slipring" I'll start having a look for one online. Is this as a clock spring? As i've been reading that perhaps that's where the problem lies.

Thanks again :)
