MK3 Octavia VRS won't exceed 100mph

Featured Replies

Hello folks, first time posting after being a lurker for a while... Just had a check engine light repair, something to do with the secondary water pump leads corroded, will put further details in later, yet on my way home I took it for a 'spirited' drive on a long private road and it just wouldn't exceed 100. Pulled well through the lower gears, but ran out of steam towards 80 and above. This water pump is something to do with the turbo I believe so could it possibly need a replacement turbo? Any information shed on this would be great! As the only garage I trust locally is closed until Monday :(

You took a car with an EPC light up for a spirted drive

You sir are {quote removed} misguided.

Thanks Mod

Please re - read my post, I've had my EPC light repaired today. No need for the profanity really was there?

Welcome.

Best thing for your pocket will be to drive very easily until Monday.

Hello VRSdall :hi:

Completely agree with ^^^George^^^ - perhaps even avoid driving it at all if that's possible, until someone can check what's wrong.  A stitch in time....

It doesn't sound related, but I had turbo failure last year, the most likely cause being coolant starvation.  That wasn't funny.  Doing my homework, there appeared to be quite a lot of mixed views around the quality of the IS20's internals at OEM.

Good luck with getting it sorted.

Skoffski & V6TDI first of all many thanks for your polite replies! And the warm welcome to the forum! Over the weekend it will be easy for me to avoid driving it, or if I need too it will be very minimal at least. Indeed as you've said a stitch in time... I do hope it isn't a turbo failure, although if it is it may be time to get out of the Skoda sooner rather than later... It's near as makes no difference 80k on the clock and has been faultless over the past 30k since I've owned it. Will post an update on Monday hopefully after diagnosis!

Have yoi excess smoke coming from exhaust? This could be a good indication that the turbo is fooked.

Don't some versions of CC come with a speed limiter? Might this have been "accidentally" turned on?

If there's a fault causing the speed to be limited to 100mph I'd expect a fault scan with VCDS or OBDeleven to show something amiss...

@donny1972 I hadn't noticed any excess smoke earlier, equally I wasn't looking either, have to go on a nappie run this evening so will observe...

@PetrolDave My MK3 is lacking cruise control unfortunately. An option that is missed sadly, but can't be arsed with retrofit as the car is leaving me in a few months for a Leon Cupra

Quick update, took it for a gentle necessary trip just now and on the return the light returned... Luckily I've managed to get hole of one of the mechanics at the garage who is willing to look at it for me tomorrow, will update incase this becomes useful for someone else in the future :)

Well with power, there's 3 things needed; fuel, air and spark. You obviously have all of those for it to be able to drive at slower speeds.

As the issue is happening at higher speeds, the issue is going to be air or fuel related. I know sometimes with issues like this, it's a clogged fuel filter. At low speeds, the flow rate needed is acceptable, but then the need for a higher flow at higher speeds can't be met.

If it was a turbo issue, I'd have assumed you'd have trouble at low speeds as well.

The main question to ask is, have you ever been able to exceed a 100mph? And if you have, how long ago?

@tunedude now you've mentioned it that does sound extremely possible! All shall be revealed in the morning hopefully! Yes I have been able to pass 100mph before hand, it just seems to be limited at the moment. It's been a few weeks since I have put it through its paces properly so to speak...

Having re-read your original post, I see you'd had some spelling challenges & I'd had some reading challenges.

Shall we call it quits ?

Where is this private road?

@themanwithnoaim not a problem with me calling it quits!  And the problem has been resolved now, was a siezed fan on the water pump or something along those lines...struggled to hear over the phone earlier but car is back performing as it should!
