Tidy phone mount!

Featured Replies

Nice little job I think!

Bracket from dashmount.co.uk and a magnetic mount from Amazon.

Lightning cable routed behind headunit to get rid of excess, and job’s a good ‘un!

Took about 15 minutes all in.

Cheers,

Nick

Nice work Nick, looks very good!

Have you got a photo of the phone on the mount, and links for the bracket and the magnetic mount?

Thanks @Wangarai!

Very pleased with it, rather than having the car look untidy with the phone half hanging out of the little tray under the USB port.

I got the bracket from here:

http://www.dashmount.co.uk/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=ilvm_fly_showroom_mall.tpl&product_id=2789&category_id=210&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=55

Make sure you contact Steve directly on the contact form, as their website is being updated and currently shows as ‘insecure’ when you put your details in and can’t make payment. I ordered this at lunchtime yesterday and arrived today.

The magnetic mount was from Amazon:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wuteku-Holder-Hexadymium-Magnets-Samsung/dp/B075FS5B25/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1551552772&sr=8-13&keywords=wuteku+magnetic+car+phone+holder

It took a little brute force and ignorance to get the lightning cable up through the side of the USB port, basically just had to push the lower trim panel to allow the Lightning connector to fit through the gap. It’s quite loose coming out of the bottom of the head unit, so can be tucked away quite easily.

To be honest, I think the placement of the USB port is pretty rubbish. Compared to previous cars it’s been out of the way, either in the glove box or centre console where you see no wires and can hide the phone away...

Cheers,

Nick

Just needs a Black USB Lightning Cable

Thanks Nick - a great help. A black cable is a good idea, as I'm a Samsung owner (I've left the darkside; Apple) black cables are de rigueur

I'm wondering if there's an alternative means to "hide" the USB and route a cable out of sight?

  • Author

@KevC_Derby, think I may have a solution to the black cable ;)

@Wangarai, funny you mention hiding the USB port; I was thinking along the lines of popping it out of the housing and leaving it in the void behind the screen, then blanking off the hole.

If it’s not peeing down too much tomorrow I might have a go at that

Cheers,

Nick

the mount looks great, you could combine both the magnetic grip and charging with an xvida.

Thanks Bud!

That looks like a really good solution.

I use Smartlink/CarPlay so need the hardwired connection via USB.

Have just ordered an Anker Powerline + black Lightning cable from Amazon (gets excellent reviews for reliability, sturdiness and has lifetime warranty):

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Anker-PowerLine-Lightning-Certified-Compatibility/dp/B07413RBY8/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1551596998&sr=8-6&keywords=anker+powerline%2B+ii+lightning

@Wangarai, I found a few images of the aux port/USB port panel on eBay, and it looks like the USB port could be easily popped out to be able to hide it.

Will post pics once I’ve finessed the job :)

Cheers,

Nick

I have wireless androidauto/carplay using a hack. my wife uses the same charging system but has a magnetic USB which is super easy to connect>disconnect.

Wireless CarPlay??? I knew about wireless AA but CarPlay without wires would be very interesting :)

I've had good results with Anker lightning cables, in fact all Anker items I've bought (cables, battery packs, USB multi port chargers etc) have been really high quality.  I generally avoid buying third party accessories for Apple devices but Anker is one exception.

Completely off topic but their bluetooth keyboard for Macs is good at <£20 (versus £100 for the Apple official one) although there are a couple of key combinations that don't work.

I cringe a bit every time I read a pundit saying port-less iPhones are likely to come in the next few years, would have to hold on to my XR for a while if that was the case. I'd hope there are too many cars with wired CarPlay still being released for them to remove the port entirely any time soon, still not many cars being released with wireless CarPlay.

I'd suggest anyone thinking about ordering from dashmount .co.uk proceed with caution.  Not only is their website insecure but the registered company listed on the website was also dissolved last month.

That’ll explain why the postmark was Harrogate and the invoice was from a company called Co-Star I think, I shredded the invoice, as I got the product, and it was what I expected!

Anyway, I got the 30cm cable this afternoon, and it’s just too short to tuck away once you take into account routing it, so have it externally, which still looks tidy as the cable’s black and short - much better than the standard Apple cable :notme:

Without figuring out how to remove the aux/USB port panel, I didn’t attempt  to pop the USB t out as it’s hidden beneath the AC controls.

I did this after work, with light and temperature dropping quickly, so will have a proper look at the weekend!

Cheers,

Nick

If you seaech on Amazon with "Costar dashmount 711421" it's listed for £18 plus £4.20 p&p. I've ordered one, the magnetic pad and a short usb to usb-c cable.

The magnetic pad arrived yesterday and is very strong, so should hold my Galaxy Note 8 in place.

Just waiting for the mount and cable to be delivered. Thanks again to Nick for the heads up on this

I don't get it. What's wrong with putting the phone in the tray underneath? I just use a 20cm braided cable and pop it in there - nice and neat.
I applaud your efforts but it's not one for me, cables squeezed through trim gaps make me shudder.

Big phones don't fit unfortunately. I have a Galaxy Note8 that I have to sit in the cup holders with the usb cable plugged in.

Ahhh, fair point.

Great!
Can u pls to help me?!

Measure me please, and tell me the size!

I'll do this for myself! =)

Ty!

You could try wiring your cable directly into the fuse box using something like this from Amazon

then you could keep the USB port free and have one less piece of cable sticking out.

Good solution though. I had a Brodit Clip and connector back in the day for my iPod, very neat and tidy solution.
