Just the tips (Exhaust Ports)

Featured Replies

So if someone was toying the idea of making the silver exhaust ports on his vehicle, black.

Would that person have a great deal of trouble first removing them from the vehicle?

If said person saw that he could buy replacement black tips for over £200, thought "sod that" in instead decided to simply change the colour of his existing ones - what paint would he be using?

Cheers all.

They are easy enough to remove, bit of a pain with the bumper on, but not impossible. I had mine powder coated, but you could use Hammerite.

There are 4 torx screws each side to undo and then they are off i panted my ones with heat resistant paint and then lacquer them with heat resistant lacquer i did it 2 years a go now and they still look good

Cheers for that.

So as long as I get something heat resistant we should be good to go.

Looks like a gloss above, I'll find a good quality black gloss spray and some lacquer for finish.

I'm not a painter really - prime these, or straight on with the black?

Key to get the chrome finished roughed up and then go in with a light base coat and build the layers from there. As mine were powder coated they were acid dipped.

Will the powder coat be ok in the heat? I have some experience with the process and some powders have remelted (real word?) after application.

My working tip looked like it was starting to go manky but it appeared to be the coating I put on it. I chipped it off and the surface underneath is good. I would not be concerned.

This question confused me until I read on. Exhaust ports are on the cylinder head. Glad you have now been advised about your exhaust outlet tips/trims.

dont waste your money on powder coat, a £7 tin of smooth hammerite is as just as good. I did mine over a year ago and they are still like new.

I purchased a can of black gloss engine paint from Halfords earlier today.

Alas the weather has stopped me getting under the rear of the car to remove them - so I'm just waiting for a dry hour to get them off so I can clean and get them ready.

My plan is then to give them a number of coats over the week before popping them back on the following weekend.

I'm assuming there is no issue driving the car without them - they are decorative rather than anything resting upon them etc?

Won't be an issue. As you say, they're decorative pieces and they only funnel the exhaust gases out the back rather than them going downwards.

Worst case scenario is you may just need to give the plastics around the tip mount a wipe down.

Mine came in black, is silver the poverty spec ?

Meh - I think I'll leave them silver.

I've just been out with the car for 90 minutes and succeeded in removing 4 of the 8 bolts in total.

Two located right at the top, as far back as can be and with fiddly little torx screws that you just cannot locate....

Anyway, was worth the investigation :)

I've not washed my car since November and they've gone black themselves.

Skoda, simply clever.
