Rusty front end treatment

Featured Replies

My brake disc guard fell off yesterday (omg the noise it made while getting home!) so had my first look at the front end. Surprised at the amount of rust on everything - driveshaft end, suspension arm, hub mounting thingy, wishbone, caliper....

New guards are on order, and I've spent some time chipping and filing away the rust on the caliper and all the other bits I can get to, but when I take the disc off to fit the guard, I think it would be good to treat all the remaining affected areas and I wondered what would others do.

My plan is to scrape and file as much as I can,  then apply some rust killer, and since I already have some black hammerite, I thought I might as well use that.

I know there are specific products , but I'm just trying to slow down the decay, and from what I read, hammerite is generally ok, and a lot better than nothing.

Any thoughts comments appreciated.

Have a look at THIS WEBSITE for everything to do with corrosion removal and prevention

I wouldn't waste the time and money, plenty of life left there.

Any excessive corrosion should be advised at MOT.

Not sure I'd worry about the wishbone etc, but I would deffo refurb the calipers, just so they look a lot cleaner through the wheels.

Spray hammerite is easier, but be careful, the overspray gets everywhere and I mean everywhere, its thick.
