Random Power Loss (Electrical)

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

This is a very random occurrence and it happens very rarely but sometimes, my Octavia 2 Facelift cuts out completely, like the main battery post has been disconnected. Every single electrical device in the car is disconnected.

When this happens while driving, it happens for under a second and reconnects. When it happens when stationary, it completely cuts out, and to fix it, I need to open the drivers door, and slam it with force.

Is this an issue anyone else has had or does anyone have any ideas what I could check?

My guess is that any vibration source would work, not just slamming the door.

Sounds like a loose or poor connection on a ground or power connection. Next time it happens when you are stationary, move the cables and connections under the bonnet, starting with battery connections. Better still, use a multimeter to find the discontinuity.

Check also for signs of corrosion or melted plastic in the fuse holder near the battery. Water ingress to the fusebox has been known to corrode the contacts on the smaller fuses giving intermittent contact and overheating/ melting of the fuse holder.

Could it also be the dreaded failing battery problem?

It's possible but if it was failure of the battery I would expect it to bring up a plethora of dash warning lights at some stage and unlikely to be fixed by slamming the door.

Could it be a dodgy ignition switch?

I will check the fuses next time I have it, as for the battery, its fairly recent and is a good brand so doubt its failing, especially as the fix is to 'shake' the car to make it work again. Reason I ask is because I've never seen anything like it and have no idea where to start lol
