105 bhp -> 130?

Featured Replies

Purely out of interest (I'm not actually going to do it)... What would actually be involved in uprating the 105BHP engine in the MK2 Octavia 4x4 1.9TDI to 130bhp? Or maybe I should ask.. what's different about the 105 in the Octavia compared to the 130?

Cheers!

I uprated mine to an alleged 140/145 hp (according to whatever sellers claims) by simply buying a replacement reprogrammed ECU for £100 on ebay and swopping it for the existing one, it has the immobiliser disabled so to avoid problems with the existing keys, if you send off the ECU for exchange they will probably copy over the key RFI chip data.

Drives a lot better, much better overtaking power and no loss of economy, took about an hour to fit.

Or get a remap to take it to about 140bhp

Definitely get the remap instead, easier than an engine swap and better results.

The 105 PD engine is a more up to date PD engine than the older 130 anyway so you would be going backwards putting the 130 lump in

A remap is the best bang for buck performance gain

How expensive would a remap be? Presumably there'd be a significant impact on insurance?

Also, I understand that the 130bhp PD that appeared in the Golf, A4, Octavia Mk1 etc was designed for 130bhp and then down-rated to 100/110/115bhp or uprated to 150 as required... Is the 105 also a down-rated engine? I'm just wondering to what extent remapping would increase the wear on what is already a high-mile engine?

This is the seller that I bought from:

Best £110 that I ever spent.

From behind the wheel it could be the original map, completely unchanged until such time as I do a mid range overtake, that is such a tiny proportion of my driving I cant see wear being an issue, the standard 130hp engines are just as long lasting.

The difference in wear is that a PD130 makes 130 by being standard. Your PD105 is now boosting nearly 18-20 PSI and making torque that the gearbox, clutch and engine were never designed to take.

Time will tell, yet to find anything on the vehicle that is not massively over-engineered.

As I say the extra torque is very rarely used.

I agree, I ran a mapped BKC for years and never blew it up. It got some stick as well as I was just a boy then :D

A stock engine will always have a better chance than a tuned one though, everybody knows that.

Thats very interesting, had I known of that i may have chosen it and would then have retained the immobiliser function, now that I have 2 ECU's I could still do so, maybe I will.

Thanks for the link.

I'm no expert but AFAIK the clutch and gearbox are the same as on the B6 Audi A4 Avant Quattro, or so I'm led to believe. The engine is the point I guess though.

I don't think so. Please correct me if i'm wrong but the engine in the Octavia is transverse is it not? The A4 platform has always been longitudinal therefore the gearboxes couldn't be more different.

The Passat B5 and Superb I were longitudinal so they would have been the same as their A4 counterpart.

Hi SuperbTWM,

The B5 1.9 FWD is transverse as well as the mk2 Octys.

I have a 1.9pd 105 4x4 running a map from Shark. I bought it not thinking I would keep it long as it felt so underpowered, ended up mapping it and it's still here 7 years later.

50k miles since the map and no problems at all.

It totally transformed the car and the economy is much the same. The short 1st gear becomes more of a pain if anything, with the extra power it's up to the limiter in no time, 2nd is much more useful so short shifting out of 1st into 2nd makes for a cleaner swift get away. Mine regularly tows about 1300kgs too. I think the clutch and 6 speed gearbox on the 4x4 may be more robust than on the 2wd models.

How much did a remap affect people’s insurance premiums?

never declared any of them, which is probably not advisable.
