Thwarted.....!

Featured Replies

Just plugged my VCDS cable into my new Karoq to enable the rear lights and it seems things have changed in the RossTech world and I’m locked out..........

Have you exceeded the Vin limit for your licence?

No, it seems the 2019 VAG motors are requiring a new style interface.

Don't understand why they can't use USB like any sane nerd would.

What cable have you got?

HEX USB +CAN

In which case, you should be able to access most modules assuming it's genuine and you're running the latest software. Depending on the spec of your car there are likely to be some modules it won't be able to access. This is because the hex usb+can is pretty old so it's down to a hardware limitation.

There are upgrade programs to trade your hex usb+can in for a hex-v2 which should fully support your car. However, you might find it better to sell it privately and buy a replacement, it likely to work out as better value as mentioned here:

Actually this started on 2015 cars.

Been onto The original supplier Gendan and they tell me that I can indeed ‘trade-in’ my cable for a £100 discount but it only applies to the top 2 options so £450 down to £350 is the cheapest option........I’ll not bother, the £225 ‘3 vin’ cable will do what I need.

@Berisford - I'd probably suggest the 10-VIN (£299) rather than the 3-VIN (£225) version, mostly as it works out as much better value and is only one upgrade away from being VIN unlimited.

The HEX-CAN has been selling for anything between £250-£360 this month on eBay. Assuming it's in good condition you might be able to get £300+ for yours ignoring any eBay/Paypal/postage fees.

Selling my little used (T5 and Golf) cable on e-bay appeals to me, however, I wouldn’t be comfortable letting someone pay top dollar for a cable and them finding out it doesn’t work with the newest motors.......it came as quite a surprise to me to find the message that my  new Karoq was not supported and to upgrade to the latest interface........

I'm not suggesting you try and trick anyone into buying it :)

I'd probably copy the description from ross-tech to make it clear that the latest cars aren't fully supported. Even if it's not worth £300 to you, it doesn't mean it isn't to someone else. TBH, I think the unlimited VIN side has to be the appeal as I can't see any other reason they sell so well.

Popped it on ebay with the description page from Ross-tech that clearly states it's discontinued and works only up to model year 2016 and it sold for £260. Buyer more than happy and it has paid for my upgrade. Happy all round.

I must say though, I haven't sold on ebay for good while now and I was taken aback at how many requests (23) I had wanting me to cancel the auction and sell it direct. My heart doesn't bleed for ebay as they've never done me any favours, but it must be a real income stream loss for them.
