TCM problem + BONUS: Water ingress

Featured Replies

Hi everybody. New here and happy owner of a Skoda Superb Elegance 1.9 TDI Automatic. Well Happy until a couple of days ago when I started having issues :(

When I left home a couple of days ago I was greeted with the message "EMISSIONS WORKSHOP"

Bought an ODB2 and came up with error P0886. Went to a mechanic and he immediately sent me to an electrician as he suspected TCM issues as on his better diagnosis tool came out a transmission intermittent error. The electrician sent me back to the mechanic to remove the TCM and bring it to him for repair. Did a little bit of research and found out that the TCM is under the footwell carpet and thought I could remove it by myself.

Now everything went down. I was shocked of what I found under the carpet - a puddle of at least 3cm deep and the TCM casing in it. Opened the TCM casing and found at least 100ml of water inside and not to mention of the water inside the module itself once I unplugged it :(

I don't think the TCM is repairable considering the state I fount it so I found a used replacement already. (did dried it out and tested but no luck)

Now, my question is: replacing the TCM will fix my issues? Should I expect more issues once I replace it? Is there another issue that might be related to the ODB fault code P0886?

The beauty and the puddle

On the automatics I believe there is another box for the auto box electronics in the same place on the drivers side. Water can pass from one side of the car floor to the other so its worth checking out if its wet.

Fix the wiring connectors in the wiring harness by cleaning and soldering and you should have yourself a really nice car again.

I've seen a lot more water in an Audi A4 and that ran okay after drying it out, so don't dispair yet.

Common issue I'm afraid ....
