How much did you save?????

Featured Replies

I know we all know by now, well, most of us, not to auto renew car insurance but i'm curious as to just how much folk have either saved or spent unnecessarily.

Last year i forgot to cancel in time and it cost me an extra £28 as it auto renewed with Hastings Direct. Luckily not too bad this time but an extra 12% nonetheless.

This year i was determined to be on it and as soon as my renewal quote came through i was on comparison sites looking for new quotes. (I always find Confused.com the cheapest for me).

Anyway, same company, same cover, and a saving of 27%. So quite a substantial saving. Thank you Confused.com.

Anyone with other good savings made?

After searching around, I have stayed with my current provider for the last 6 or 7 years. Although they are probably £30-40 more expensive than the cheapest quote, they have been very efficient and professional to deal with.

Prior to them I was with Škoda/VW Insurance Service who were the cheapest around, but after 3 years their quotes went ridiculously high.

Having said all of that, my renewal is due soon, so I may change my tune!

Similar view to Fin; It seems almost impossible to find a quote for under £200, so I've stuck with LV= and continued to enjoy cover for employer's business and for me to drive 3rd party cars with the keeper's permission for £220.

I too am with Hastings Direct. Once I have my quote, I do a comparison (Go compare), if cheaper I ring Hasings to see if they can match, they normally do, then stay with them. Done it for several years. I'm sure one of the first years I did it they knocked off over £100 from my quote and got it cheaper than anyone else.

My insurance renewal is Mid January. This year HD quoted £230. I could get it for £190-200, so rang and ended up paying £209, which I thought was reasonable.

My renewal with them this year was £263. I cancelled.

Renewed through Conf.com at £192 a few weeks before it was due and that includes business mileage though I do not do loads of miles.

My aim was to get 2 cars insured for £400 or less 2 years ago. I managed it coming in at £396 going with different companies. When the renewals came through it was bumped up to over £500 so I hit the compare sites again.

Although I put no calls accepted as a way of contact one got through I didn't tell them to beggar off (I usually do) but glad I didn't. After a good deal of negotiation and around three phone call backs we hit on a deal of like for like cover for £383 for both cars and home insurance, that was Admiral multi cover.

Now considering my home insurance came in last time at £120 less a loyalty coupon to spend at Sainsburys for £25  (Sainsburys insurance) I said you need to better £95 for the home insurance, they put that in at £67.

The renewal came through last November from Admiral, after further negotiations (haggling the renewal price down) they chopped the price quoted from £480 down to £440. I still couldn't get 2 cars and home insurance on any comparison sites for less than around £550.

Mine actually saved us money by offering us a multi car deal for less combined than either of us were paying for our cars individually... and the Mrs still haggled over that price!

Bye-bye to Sheila's Wheels for the wife, hello from my gals at Admiral.

I had my renewal through late last month and unfortunately let it lapse, 36 hrs after it lapsed I called my company to renew.

I was told that as renewal had lapsed I would need to be re quoted, surprise surprise the new quote was £40 cheaper for same cover.

The thing is the renewal quote was reasonable and I would have paid it had I remembered in time. As I had not used the car during its

'uninsured' period I think I may plan to repeat this exercise at next renewal but on purpose.

I had a similar one on the van. I changed from monthly payments to one-off and decreased my voluntary excess and it went down about £100 (not including the interest) as Aviva decided they had to re-quote it as a new policy.

^^^ you pay less with 'one off' or annual payment anyways. (but yes, you not included interest).

A list of companies that do not 'auto renew' would be nice to know, as i thought this was pretty common standard practice nowadays and you have to ring them to cancel, no? This is certainly the case with Hastings.........

My wife went from £320 with QuoteMeHappy to £196 with Admiral.

Ford Focus Titanium X 68 plate diesel with one years NCB.

I think she got lucky because she moved from a Fiesta to a Focus and the Focus was the new shape and so next to no claims involving it (underwriters take that sort of thing into account when setting prices).

You must have a car that is not SORN'd insured at all times even if not used - otherwise you trigger an automatic NIP letter in the post

Thx for that info.........unaware!

Bang goes that idea then :(
