...wouldn't like to be a trader nowadays, don't know how they make any money...

I was chatting to a small dealer who said it was hard to compete as the bigger fish can pay over the odds at the auction making most of their profit on the finance instead.
But he did then go on to 'fix' my old focus with bathroom sealant so what does he know.

Relative to the discounts available on new cars, dealers are overpricing used ones in my opinion but are not willing to negotiate. And then the cars don't sell.

BCA / British Car Auctions lend money to car dealers to buy cars at the prices they sell at auction.

But if you look at who owns BCA you will understand really what is going on.

and... I think it takes the p1ss when main dealers then try to add £95 "admin fee" on to the final price of the used car. It's the sort of backhand sly trick I'd expect some dodgy dealer to pull, not a main dealer. Point blank as a matter of principle I'm not paying an admin fee. If you want to take the £95 off the agreed price then fine I guess, but don't expect that's a sly way to squeeze a bit more out of me.

Vote with your feet. Don't buy from a dealer who tries to charge and admin fee, but be sure to tell them the reason you're walking away.

oh, I have. Told them to get back to me if anything changes re their position. But they have "lots of people interested" - of course they do...

It's pushing me more and more to buying new, despite the wait (I actually prefer the pre-facelift though), as the 2 year depreciation on the new one might be less than a used one!
