Japanese car names (again)

Featured Replies

I wonder why this model wasn't released outside Japan?

Or am I just easily amused?

The old Bongo Friendee may lack the farty humour of the 'Windy', but I don't think there's anything else out there with such an odd name... ;):D

Pretty much all of the Japanese cars in NZ come directly from Japan or Singapore as second-hand imports. So we get all kinds of weird names.

Toyota Levin, Windom, Prado, Lexus IS200 is an Altezza, Mazda 323 is a Familia, or something else if it's the coupe or the hatchback.

Strange!

Nissan Figaro cracks me up :)

Would you believe it - I was walking through Wellington yesterday and what did I see parked at the side of the road? Only a Bongo Friendee in the flesh!!

Saw it later on too!

Another weird thing too - here there's Toyota Cavaliers and Corsas.

The equivalent Vauxhalls are Holden Vectras and Barinas

you have got to be kidding!?!?

How about

Izuzu Bighorn?

nothing like a bit of public schoolboy humour:rofl:

Excellent! Puts the Spanish translation for 'Nova' (or more specifically, No va) into perspective!!!

Just seen one towing a kebab van in wiltshire

Mitsubishi's Starion is the most famous example. They meant to call it Stallion but ended spelling it the way Japanese pronounce it. By the time this was pointed out, it was too late to make a correction, so the PR department concocted an explanation about stars from the Orion constellation.

The Altezza is much better than an IS200 purely because of the more powerful engine & body kit and it's cheaper. What a bargain!!!
