Strange noise when cornering at low speed

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

My 2016 mk3 makes a noise when im cornering at low speed. Can only describe it as a whomp whomp whomp. Gonna take it to dealership as under warranty, but does anyone have/had similar problem?

TIA

In my experience its sounds as if the front tyre(s) have abnormal wear or flat spot(s) on the inside or outside edges of the tread and have effectively become non circular in these regions. Could be caused by bad parking on a kerb, bad alignment, weak shock absorber, or simply a bad tyre (I have a Michelin Crossclimate where this has happened)

If found when I drive on a dry dusty area and then look at the tyre tread you can see where the high/low points are. And yes it makes a whoomp whoomp sound the more you turn in a particular direction, linked to tyre rotation speed.

When you turn, the caster angle means the tyres lean over onto the inside or outside edges depending on side and direction of turn

Try swapping with a spare on each front to find the culprit tyre.

Hi xman, thanks for the very interesting reply. If this is whats causing it i assume the tyre has to be changed asap? The are ps4s so good tyres and still got 7mm :(

Check the inside edges of the rear tyres,  mine went wavy and made a strange noise at slow speed. I left it for ages till it did it in a straight line then they had to go!
