Android Auto - Google Play Music - local files

Recommended Posts

Hi,

This is driving me a bit mad, and I wanted to know if it's a restriction, bug or else....

I'm using Android Auto and all works fine and more than I expected, for the exception of Google Play Music. When I choose this option in the Android Auto app, it shows the content but when I play a music, the sound instead of coming out from the car's speakers it comes out only from the smartphone speaker.

With all other apps, navigation, calls, radio apps, etc... all comes out from the car speakers. Only local (mp3) files played by Play Music don't come out in car speakers.

I even unpaired and deleted all cache and data from Android Auto and re-established connection and pairing. Problem continues.

Anyone has encountered this? Is there a work around?

Thanks in advance

Assuming you are using an Android phone. I don't use any form of "phone music" therefore no expert .  Suggest you search Google's Play and Android Auto forums to see if there's any similar problems ( https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!home ) - if it was Amundsen related I'd have thought there would be many posts on this forum.

Off the top of my head, have you looked at:

Phone Bluetooth settings - AFAIK "music" via Bluetooth isn't supported on Android Auto - insufficient bandwidth.  I think I've seen a message that Bluetooth is being disabled when connecting phone  on Columbus.

If you have Developer Options enabled in phone settings then there is a switch under "Media" that disables USB Audio Routing

I haven't had the issue, so can't really help

I have used Google Play, and played "local" music through the Android Auto to the car speakers succesfully, but I find the Google Play interface so annoying for actually trying to play "local" music (and my phone doesn't have its own "music" app) that I've moved to a different app - Rocket mp3 player - to play my local music. It is compatible with Android auto,

Hi, Thanks for the input.

Music is played, but as long as it's streaming. The weird thing is one time and just for a few seconds I was able to listen on car speakers.

But when I connect in Amundsen, I get the message connected device cannot be used to play media. So all needs to be via Android Auto.

The only issue is with Play. I'll look around.

If I use Google play without Android Auto, I can listen to local files, all works fine.

The only problem is via Android Auto. If it's streaming, all is ok.

Nevertheless I installed Rocket and works like a charm. I listen in car speakers with no problem at all.

Thanks for the tip and input.

@Linox This thread on the Google Play product support looks like it is your issue but it "dies" in late 2018. Ignore the "Huawei" in the title, it roams across many phones and I saw Golf and Kodiak posts. Might be worth starting a new thread - getting to the end of a thread is so slow that people might not read your post.  Huawei devices - No sound when playing music

Thanks for the help.

I'll try this:"If I have Play Music running in background and THEN open Android Auto, everything works fine, BUT - if I run Android Auto without opening Play Music beforehand, it does not work"

I'll post what happened... :)

UPDATE

I tried the workaround "Play Music running in background and THEN open Android Auto, everything works fine, BUT - if I run Android Auto without opening Play Music beforehand, it does not work", and it works until the music stops.

If I change music, it will switches immediately from car speakers to phone speaker.

Conclusion, it's a bug that needs to be addressed at Android OS Bluetooth module by manufacturer.

Therefore I'll stick to using Rocket and works like a charm.

Thanks to all

Hi to all...

Just an update that might help some...

I received an update for my smartphone.... and ... This is one item fixed:

 Firmware 2.7.0 (Android 8.1.0 Oreo)

  • Android security patch level: March 2019
  • Device does not turn on with programmer enabled
  • Music does not play when using the carkit with Android Auto
  • FM radio recording
  • Improved Bluetooth

Doing the update now, and will test later....

So definitely a problem with Android OS
